Solvent Effects in Micellar and Proton Transfer Processes

Abstract:

Tato disertační práce obsahuje dvě nezávislé části, jejichž společným tématem jsou účinky rozpouštědel na vybrané fyzikálně-chemické procesy. První část se skládá ze dvou projektů zaměřených na studium kationtových reverzních micel při laboratorní teplotě a teplotě pod bodem mrazu. Byl navržen model tvorby reverzních micel konzistentní s Eickeho modelem, ve kterém lineární agregáty surfaktantu tvoří reverzní micely při koncentraci surfaktantu zvané kritická micelární koncentrace (cmc), ve které koexistují reverzní micely a premicelární agregáty. Na určení cmc byly použity pouze přímé metody bez využití molekulárních sond, a to 1H NMR, izotermální titrační kalorimetrie (ITC) a vodivostní měření. DOSY NMR spektroskopie ukázala polydisperzitu vzorku v koncentračním rozsahu cmc. Pomocí NMR spektroskopie byly studovány vlastnosti vody jak v premicelárních agregátech tak v micelárním vodném jádru. ITC pak poskytlo informaci o termodynamice micelizace. V dalším projektu se testovala stabilita kationtových reverzních micel při teplotách pod bodem mrazu. Při −20 °C byl pozorován úbytek podchlazené micelární vody a také zmrazení části vodného jádra. Po rychlém zchlazení z laboratorní teploty na −40 °C byla struktura reverzních micel zachována, ale signál vody se ztratil kvůli neviditelnosti ledu v 1H NMR spektrech. Díky malé velikosti vodního jádra reverzních micel byl vytvořený led v amorfní formě. Proces mrznutí začal při teplotě vyšší než je obecně známo pro homogenní nukleaci, proto lze předpokládat, že za těchto podmínek se led tvoří heterogenní nukleací, pravděpodobně díky kationtové povaze povrchu vodného jádra reverzních micel. Druhá část dizertační práce se zaměřuje na fotochemii p-hydroxyacetofenonu. Jeho tautomerizační reakce v tripletovém stavu a přenosy protonu v excitovaném stavu byly podrobně studovány pomocí nanosekundové laserové zábleskové fotolýzy. Bylo zjištěno, že koncentrace a doby života tripletových intermediátů silně závisí na pH roztoku. Pro tautomerizaci byl vyvinut kinetický model, který vedl k porozumění naměřeným kinetickým údajům. Diskutován je i jednoznačný důkaz existence tautomeru chinoidního enolu při neutrálním pH. Reakční cesta, ve které se tato sloučenina tvoří, způsobuje ztrátu excitační energie a tak snižuje účinnost odchránění p-hydroxyfenacylové fotolabilní chránící skupiny.

Abstract:

This work contains two parts that have a common aim: understanding the solvent effects in selected physico-chemical processes. The first part consists of two projects focusing on the properties of cationic reverse micelles at room and subzero temperatures. A model of micellization consistent with Eicke`s model was proposed, according to which pre-micellar surfactant aggregates form reverse micelles in a concentration region called the “apparent” critical micellar concentration (cmc) where both reverse micelles and the pre-micellar aggregates coexist. To determine the apparent cmc, only direct methods, such as 1H NMR, isothermal titration calorimetry (ITC) and conductivity measurements, which do not use probe molecules were employed. DOSY NMR spectroscopy clearly showed the polydispersity of the sample in the concentration range of the apparent cmc. The properties of water in pre-micellar aggregates or encapsulated in the water core of reverse micelles were examined by NMR spectroscopy. ITC provided the information about the energetics of micellization. In the second project, the stability of cationic reverse micelles was tested at subzero temperatures. At −20 °C, a slow loss of supercooled encapsulated water (water shedding) was observed together with partial freezing of the micellar core. Upon fast cooling from room temperature to −40 °C, the structure of reverse micelles remained unchanged, but the NMR signal of water was lost due to the invisibility of the ice in the 1H NMR spectra. Due to the small size of the water core of the reverse micelles, the formed ice was in an amorphous form which was corroborated by a quantum chemistry calculation. The process of freezing started at temperatures higher than that known for typical homogeneous nucleation, so the heterogeneous nucleation was hypothesized, probably caused by the cationic character of the water core surface. The second part focuses on the photochemistry of p-hydroxyacetophenone. Its tautomerization reaction in the triplet state and excited state proton transfers (ESPTs) were studied thoroughly by nanosecond laser flash photolysis. The concentration and lifetimes of the observed triplet intermediates depend heavily on the pH of the solution. A kinetic model for the tautomerization was developed to help to understand the measured kinetic traces and to propose new experiments. Unambiguous proof of quinoid enol tautomer at neutral pH is discussed, and this compound represents the major excitation energy wasting pathway competing with the uncaging of the p-hydroxyphenacyl photoremovable protecting group.
