The Institutional environment of African countries

Abstract:

Předmětem diplomové práce „Institucionální prostředí afrických zemí“ je analýza významných literárních pramenů z oblasti politických a ekonomických institucí a jejich uplatnění na africký kontinent. Výběr literatury přesahuje ekonomické prameny a čerpá i z oblasti politologie a antropologie. Podstatná část práce se věnuje popisu hlavních determinantů institucionálního prostředí a následné aplikaci na prostředí afrických zemí. Práce je rozdělena následovně. Nejprve se podíváme, co jsou to instituce, jak vznikají a jaký mohou mít vliv na společnost. Následně si ukážeme, jak se historicky proměňovala jejich úloha v ekonomických úvahách o hospodářském růstu. Závěrem tyto nabyté znalosti uplatníme na africký kontinent a na několika příkladech si ukážeme, jak teorie odpovídá realitě. Poslední kapitoly práce obsahují kritickou diskusi a samotný závěr.

Abstract:

The main goal of the thesis “The Institutional Environment of African countries“ is to provide an analysis of significant literature on political and economic institutions and their application to the African continent. Selected literature goes beyond the economic field and draws on political science and anthropology. A substantial part of the work is devoted to description of the main determinants of the institutional environment and subsequent application to the environment of the African countries. The thesis is divided as follows. First, we’ll explain what institutions are, how they develop and how they affect the society. Then we show how they historically transformed their role in the understanding of economic growth. Finally, we apply this knowledge to the African continent and provide several examples to show how the theory corresponds to reality. The last chapters contain critical discussion and conclusion.
