Morgan le Fay and themes of the Other World in the chivalric romance Sir Gawain and the Green knight

Abstract:

Srovnáním motivů v romanci Sir Gawain a zelený rytíř a sbírce velšských bájí Mabinogi výzkum zjišťuje, jestli motivy z této sbírky, která mapuje domnělé dějiny Britských ostrovů před příchodem křesťanství, byly použity pro obraz Jiného světa ve zkoumané romanci. Tímto srovnáním práce nastiňuje, do jaké pozice autor Sira Gawaina stavěl motivy Jiného světa vůči křesťanským motivům. Nadpřirozeno Jiného světa se v křesťanské mytologii nevyskytuje, ale je hojně zastoupeno v bájích nejen velšských, ale i irských a bretaňských, tedy na území ve středověku obývaném původně ostrovními Kelty. Dále se práce zaměřuje na postavu Morgany le Fay a zjišťuje, do jaké míry se podobá osobám z bájí Mabinogi, protože se tato postava po asi dvě století v britských artušovských legendách nevyskytovala a její charakter ve zkoumané básni se liší od postav starší anglické literatury i francouzských romancí s Morganou ztotožňovaných. Tímto způsobem chce má práce přispět k diskuzi o pramenech, které ovlivňovaly artušovské legendy.

Abstract:

My research shows through systematic comparison of themes, if those from collection of Welsh myths The Mabinogion were used as source for the chivalrous romance Sir Gawain and the Green Knight. The Mabinogion myths mostly describe presumed pre-Christian history of Wales. Through this comparison my work outlines the position of Christian and the Other world themes in Sir Gawain. The Otherworld themes are unknown in original Christian supernatural but common in Welsh, Irish and Breton myths, those lands were in the Middle Ages inhabited by originally Insular Celts. Furthermore the research discovers similarities between Morgan le Fay and the characters of The Mabinogion, because Morgan as a character was absent from British Arthurian legends for several centuries and her character differs in Sir Gawain and in older British literature and French romances. This way my work contributes to the discussion about the literary sources that influenced Arthurian legends.
