Abstract:

Anotace Diplomová práce „William Saroyan: Chance Meetings. Translation and Analysis“ se v praktické části zabývá překladem vybraných kapitol z díla Williama Saroyana Chance Meetings, které je sbírkou memoárů známého spisovatele. Cílem této části je dosáhnout rovnováhy mezi volným, moderním překladem a jedinečný a komplikovaným stylem autora. V teoretické části se vyjadřuje k rysům specifickým pro styl daného autora, k všeobecným problémům, se kterými se překladatel může setkat a vysvětluje lingvistická rozhodnutí na podkladu moderních překladatelských teorií. Dále srovnává překlad obsažený v praktické části diplomové práce s překladem profesionálního překladatele Jozefa Schwarze a upozorňuje na rozdíly mezi těmito dvěma verzemi. Tyto rozdíly spočívají především ve strnulosti jazyka a zastaralých výrazech staršího překladu.

Abstract:

Annotation Diploma thesis William Saroyan: Chance Meetings. Translation and Analysis deals in the practical part with translation of chosen chapters of William Saroyans work Chance Meetings, a collection of memoirs of the well-known writer. The aim of this part is to reach a balance between the free, modern translation and the extraordinary, complicated style of the author. In the theoretical part, it discusses features specific for the authors style, general problems a translator has to deal with and it explains the linguistic choices based on modern translation theories. Furtermore, it compares the translation contained in the practical part of the diploma thesis with the translation of Jozef Schwarz, a professional translator and points out the differencies between these two versions. These differencies lay mainly in the rigidness of the language and outdated expressions of the older translation.
