Diminutives and Changes of their Use

Abstract:

Předmětem této diplomové práce je otázka výskytu a funkce deminutiv v české komunikaci dvou odlišných časových období a následné srovnání získaných poznatků. Podstatou zkoumání jsou pouze ta deminutiva, která se tvoří od substantiv. Práce je rozdělena na část teoretickou a praktickou. V teoretické části věnuji pozornost samotnému pojmu „deminutivum“, dále funkčnímu využití deminutiv v češtině, jejich tvoření pomocí deminutivních sufixů a prvním zmínkám o deminutivech v českých lingvistických příručkách. V praktické části porovnávám užití deminutiv v současné komunikaci a komunikaci z přelomu 19. a 20. století. Hlavním cílem mé práce bylo předvést, jaké zdrobněliny, v jaké četnosti a z jakých důvodů se v daných textech vyskytují. Příklady jsou čerpány z tisků vycházejících v konkrétním sledovaném období, které jsou zaměřeny na jednotlivé generace a typy čtenářů.

Abstract:

This master's thesis is concerned with exploring the usage and function of diminutives in Czech communication of two different time periods and with comparison of the findings. The analysis takes into account only diminutives derived from nouns. The thesis contains a theoretical and a practical part. In the theoretical part the term “diminutive” is defined, its functional usage in Czech and its formation by adding diminutive suffixes is described, and the first mentions of diminutives in Czech linguistic text-books are presented. The practical part compares the usage of diminutives in contemporary communication and communication at the turn of the 19th century. The main aim of my thesis was to examine which diminutives, in what frequency, and from what reasons occur in concrete texts. Examples were taken from periodicals aimed at various generations and types of readers that were published in the time period in question.
