Optimism, generativity, meaningfulness a depression in relation to life satisfaction: A comparison of Czech na Indian young adults

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývá vztahem mezi životní spokojeností, generativitou, depresí, smyslem života a optimem, u české a indické populace. Výzkumu se zúčastnilo celkem 240 osob ve věku 18 – 29 let, z toho 111 Čechů a 129 Indů. Data byla sesbírána pomocí mezinárodní studie Hope Barometer 2016. V rámci výzkumu jsme zjišťovali vzájemné vztahy mezi zkoumanými proměnnými, následně byly zjišťovány prediktory životní spokojenosti. Dále jsme srovnali, zda se indický a český vzorek liší v míře jednotlivých proměnných. V neposlední řadě jsme zjišťovány rozdíly v jednotlivých proměnných v závislosti na různých demografických proměnných (pohlaví, vzdělání, psychické a fyzické zdraví, rodinný status a dobrovolnická činnost). Pro zjištění míry jednotlivých proměnných byly využity následující nástroje: Satisfaction with life scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985), Life Orientation Test - Revised, (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges,1994), Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Schnell, 2009), Meaning in life Questionnaire (Steger, Frazier, Oishi, & Kaler, 2006) a Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (Kroenke, Spitzer, Williams, & Löwe, 2009). U české populace byly nalezeny statisticky významné vztahy mezi životní spokojeností, depresí, smyslem života a optimismem. Nebyly však nalezeny statisticky významné vztahy mezi životní spokojeností a generativitou. Výsledky regresní analýzy odhalily tři nezávislé prediktory životní spokojenosti, kterými byla deprese, optimismus a smysl života. U indické populace byly nalezeny statisticky významné vztahy mezi všemi proměnnými. Regresní analýza však odhalila pouze tři prediktory životní spokojenosti – smysl života, optimismus a deprese. Pro depresi byly nalezeny negativní vztahy. Dále byl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl mezi oběma zeměmi v míře životní spokojenosti, depresi, smyslu života a optimismu. Nebyly nalezeny statisticky významné rozdíly u proměnné generativita. Nebyl nalezen statisticky významný rozdíl v míře sledovaných proměnných v závislosti na pohlaví, dosaženém vzdělání a angažování se v dobrovolnických aktivitách. Naopak psychický a fyzický stav měl vliv na životní spokojenost a depresi u českého vzorku, a na životní spokojenost, depresi a optimismus u indického vzorku. Míra životní spokojenosti se také u českého vzorku lišila v závislosti na rodinném stavu.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the relationship between life satisfaction, generativity, depression, meaningfulness and optimism in Czech and Indian population. The research included 240 persons, in the age 18-29, 111 persons were from Czech Republic and 129 from India. The data were collected with the help of international study Hope Barometer 2016. In our research we examined the interrelationship between all examined variables and then we searched for the predictors of life satisfaction. In each variable we compared the differences in Indian and Czech sample. At last we examined the differences in all variables depending on demographic variables (gender, education, physical and psychological health, family status and volunteering). For measurement we used following research methods: Satisfaction with life scale (Diener, Emmons, Larsen, & Griffin, 1985), Life Orientation Test - Revised, (Scheier, Carver, & Bridges,1994), Sources of Meaning and Meaning in Life Questionnaire (Schnell, 2009), Meaning in life Questionnaire (Steger, Frazier, Oishi, & Kaler, 2006) a Patient Health Questionnaire for Depression and Anxiety (Kroenke, Spitzer, Williams, & Löwe, 2009). We found statistically significant relation between life satisfaction, depression, meaning in life and optimism. There was not found statistically significant relation between life satisfaction and generativity. The results of regression analyses showed three independent predictors of life satisfaction which are depression, optimism and meaning in life. There was found statistically significant relationship between all variables in Indian sample. However, regression analyses discovered only three predictors of life satisfaction – meaning of life, optimism and depression. There has been found negative relation for depression in both samples. Then it was found statistically significant difference between two countries in the levels of life satisfaction, depression, meaning in life and optimism. There was not found statistically significant differences in generativity. There was found no statistically significant difference in levels of variables depending on gender, education and engaging in volunteering. On the contrary, psychological and physical health had impact on life satisfaction and depression in Czech sample, and it also had impact on life satisfaction, depression and optimism in Indian sample. We also found differences in the level of life satisfaction depending on family status in Czech sample.
