Course-quality representations at the university level

Abstract:

Tato práce se věnuje studentskému pohledu na kvalitu výuky na vysoké škole, konkrétně na oboru Psychologie na Masarykově univerzitě. Jejím cílem bylo zjistit, jaká mají studenti očekávání od vysoké školy, jakou výuku považují za kvalitní, jakým způsobem o ní uvažují a jak se tyto jejich názory utváří. Dřívější výzkumy, např. Sander et al. (2000) nebo Donaldová a Denison (2001) přistupovali k otázce očekávání studentů od výuky převážně kvantitativně. V této práci jsem si kladl za úkol prozkoumat tuto problematiku důkladněji pomocí kvalitativních metod. Výzkumný soubor obsahuje celkem 8 respondentů v rozhovorech a 7 respondentů ve focus group. Výsledky analýzy jejich výpovědí mě vedly k závěru, že klíčovou charakteristikou určující studentův pohled na kvalitu výuky je motivace – ta je ve výsledném modelu rozdělena na čtyři kategorie - motivaci výkonem, vztahy, znalostmi a dovednostmi. Ke každé z těchto kategorií přísluší určitý pohled na kvalitu výuky a také to, jaké potřeby chce student na vysoké škole naplnit. Z analýzy rozhovorů vyplynulo, že studenti nehledají na vysoké škole jen znalosti, ale také naplnění hlubších potřeb - např. pocit bezpečí, přijetí nebo jistoty a důvěry ve vlastní schopnosti – které mohou být ovlivněny vyučujícími, způsobem výuky i organizační kulturou školy. V diskusi je tato problematika rozebírána ve vztahu k utváření identity studenta na VŠ. Dále jsou podávány podněty pro zkvalitnění procesu hodnocení výuky.

Abstract:

This thesis deals with the students´ view of course-quality at a university, specifically at the studies of Psychology at Masaryk University. The goal was to explore, what students expect from university education, what they see as course quality, in what ways do they think about it and how do their opinions concerning it arise. Previous research, e.g. Sander et al. (2000) or Donald & Denison (2001) have used a quantitative approach in this field. The goal of this thesis was to explore the topic more thoroughly using qualitative methods. The research sample contains 8 respondents in interviews and 7 respondents in a focus group. The results of the analysis have led me to the conclusion, that the key characteristic affecting a students´ view of course quality is his or her motivation. In the resulting model, motivation is divided into four categories – relationship, achievement, knowledge and ability. Students´ view of course quality depends on their motivation category and also on what kind of needs does he or she want to fulfill at the university. The analysis of interviews has contributed to the finding, that students do not go to university only for knowledge, but also seek fulfillment of more basic needs – e.g. sense of security, acceptance or belief in their own abilities - which can be affected by teachers, teaching approaches and the whole organization culture of the university. The results are discussed in connection with identity development and also put into context of creating tools for teaching evaluation.
