Arcae: Boxes with Christian Images. Historiography, cult of relics, uses (4th – 6th centuries)

Abstract:

The present study focuses on boxes with Christian imagery conceived in the Western Mediterranean area over a period stretching from the fourth to the sixth century AD. This group of objects presents technical, visual, functional, and material similarities, and form a fundamental part of Late Antique intellectual and material culture. The thesis examines a variety of box-shaped objects made of bronze, brass, ivory, gold or silver representing images drawn from the emerging Christian figurative repertoire, opening new points of view on their place within a society in transition. These prospects are explored through three different directions of study which take into account the historiography of these objects as well as the art historical questions they posed at the moment of their creation. The first axis is dedicated to reintegrating these objects into a broader methodological and historiographical frame. The second part suggests – through theoretical premises and case studies – new ways to consider Late Antique reliquaries. Finally, the third part of this thesis postulates the importance of the category of boxes with Christian images – and beyond their function of reliquary – in Late Antique material culture. This last part is interested not only in understanding the driving force behind the creation of these objects, but also the successive values which they can acquire during their long histories. In sum, the present thesis hopes to offer a broader and more nuanced insight into a crucial part of the shared culture of objects that extends around the Mediterranean basin.

Abstract:

Předmětem této práce jsou skříňky s křesťanskými obrazy z oblasti západního Středomoří, datované do období mezi čtvrtým a šestým stoletím. Tato skupina objektů vykazuje technické, vizuální, funkční a materiální podobnosti, které utváří zásadní část pozdně antické intelektuální a materiální kultury. Práce zkoumá řadu objektů ve tvaru skříněk z bronzu, mosazi, slonoviny, zlata a stříbra, které zachycují výjevy z formujícího se křesťanského obrazového repertoáru a otevírají nové pohledy na jejich místo v rámci transformující se společnosti. Tyto pohledy jsou zkoumány třemi různými způsoby, které zvažují historiografii těchto objektů, jakož i uměleckohistorické otázky, které vyvstaly v momentě jejich vzniku. První část je věnována reintegraci těchto objektů do širšího metodologického a historiografického rámce. Druhá část představuje skrze teoretické předpoklady a případové studie nové způsoby, jak uvažovat nad pozdně antickými relikviáři. Konečně třetí část této práce prezentuje důležitost kategorie skříněk s raně křesťanskými obrazy – nad rámec jejich funkce relikviářů – v pozdně antické materiální kultuře. Tato poslední část se zajímá nejen o pochopení hybných sil na pozadí tvorby těchto objektů, ale také o další hodnoty, které mohly získat v průběhu dějin. Stručně řečeno, předložená práce nabízí širší a vyváženější vhled do problematiky fundamentální části sdílené kultury objektů, které se šířily v oblasti Středomoří.
