The importance of ionic composition of xylem sap on efficiency of long-distance transport in plants

Abstract:

Transportní cesta vody v rostlinách je poměrně dlouhá, přesto se voda musí spolehlivě dopravit z půdy až ke vzdáleným nadzemním částem, které by při jejím nedostatku mohly uhynout. Transport vody v rostlině je tedy jeden z nejdůležitějších procesů. K vedení vody z kořenů do nadzemních částí slouží specializovaný transportní systém zvaný xylém. Po celá desetiletí se vědci domnívali, že vodivost xylému je v krátkém časovém úseku konstantní a že je určena především strukturou vodivých elementů, jejich průměrem a délkou. Poměrně nedávno se však ukázalo, že i iontové složení xylémové šťávy může významně ovlivnit vodivost xylému a tím i rychlost toku vody rostlinou. Jakým mechanismem k tomuto efektu dochází je však stále předmětem intenzivního výzkumu. Práce shrnuje nejdiskutovanější mechanismy, které se při této reakci uplatňují. Ukazuje souvislosti se strukturními znaky xylému a hypotézu související s pektiny. Popisuje vliv konkrétních typů iontů, závislosti na jejich koncentraci i rozdíly v reakci mezi druhy rostlin. Zabývá se také souvislostmi tohoto jevu s opravami poruch xylému, jež jsou způsobené kavitací a celkovou regulací transportu vody v rostlině.

Abstract:

The path of water transport in plants is considerably long and still the water has to transport reliably from soil up to remote above-ground parts, which could die of the shortage of water. The transport of water in plants is, therefore, one of the most important processes. Xylem, which is a specialized system of transport, enables routing of water from roots to above-ground parts. For centuries, it had been believed by scientists that conductivity of xylem is constant in a shortterm period of time and that it is mainly determined by the structure of xylem elements, their diameter and length. However, it was relatively recently shown that also ionic composition of xylem sap can significantly influence the conductivity of xylem and therefore also the velocity of the water flowing in a plant. The mechanism which causes this effect is nonetheless still subject of intensive research. This thesis summarises the most discussed mechanisms that may be involved in this response. It shows connections with structural features of xylems and hypothesis related to pectins. It describes the influence of specific types of ions, dependency on their concentrations and differences of reactions between the types of plants. The thesis also deals with links between this effect and repairs of xylem failure that is caused by cavitation and the overall regulation of water transport in a plant.
