Discursive Dilemma and The Ontology of Society

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce analyzuje metodologický přístup Christiana Lista a Philipa Pettita k problematice skupinového aktérství a společenskovědní teorie obecně. První část práce pojednává o specifickém paradoxu teorie společenské volby, který tito autoři nazývají diskurzivní dilema. Následující pasáže umisťují Listův a Pettitův návrh na únik z diskurzivního dilematu do kontextu jejich obecné teorie aktéra a spojují tak oba základní stavební kameny jejich teorie skupinového aktérství. Kritická a závěrečná část se vypořádávají s námitkami na nepřesnost Listova a Pettitova výkladu, především nejasnosti v ontologickém postavení skupinových aktérů. Zakotvením jejich díla v širším kontextu tzv. intencionální epistemologické strategie se v práci pokouším najít takové interpretace těchto nejasných míst, které Listovu a Pettitovu metodologii a jejich závěry obhájí.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis analyses methodological aspects of Christian List’s and Philip Pettit’s work on the notion of group agency and on general social-scientific theory. First part of the theses concerns with a specific paradox of social choice theory named discursive dilemma. Following chapters put List’s and Pettit’s proposal for evading discursive dilemma into context of their general theory of agency, thus connecting the two fundamental structural elements of their theory of group agency. The critical and final parts deal with objections towards List’s and Pettit’s alleged imprecision in articulation primarily aimed at unclarity of ontological status of group agents. By grounding their work in wider context of the so called intentional epistemological strategy I try to find such interpretations of these unclear spots that would defend the authors’ methodology and conclusions.
