Contributions of Dr. Emil Holub when exploring Africa

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce je zhodnotit přínos Dr. Emila Holuba po jeho cestách jižní Afrikou vykonané v letech 1872-1879 a 1883-1887. Dr. Emil Holub se již od mládí zabýval sběratelskou činností, kterou rozšířil při svých dvou výzkumných cestách. Zasloužil se o rozšíření povědomí o domorodých afrických kmenech, které podrobně popsal ve svých dvou cestopisech Sedm let v jižní Africe a Dra Emila Holuba Druhá cesta po jižní Africe. Během své první cesty podniknuté v letech 1872-1879 podrobně zpracoval jako první na světě mapu Viktoriiných vodopádů. V práci kladu důraz hlavně na druhou cestu, kterou cestovatel vykonal v letech 1883-1887 se svými společníky a manželkou Rosou. Cílem cesty bylo přejít celou Afriku z jihu na sever, což však kvůli napadení od kmene Mašukulumbů zůstalo neuskutečněno. Cílem práce je zhodnotit cestovatelovy přínosy, kterými značně rozšířil několik vědních oborů. Za zmínku stojí obsáhlý etnografický výzkum afrických kmenů a následné uspořádání dvou Afrických výstav v letech 1891 ve Vídni a 1892 v Praze. Cestovatel byl také úspěšný ve své přednáškové činnosti a po návratu z druhé cesty byl pozván na přednáškové turné po Severní Americe.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to evaluate the contribution of Dr. Emil Holub from his journeys across South Africa carried out in the years 1872-1879 and 1883-1887. Emil Holub was engaged in collecting activities since his youth and he expanded them at his two research trips. He helped to raise awareness of indigenous African tribes, which he detaily described in his two travelogues "Sedm let v jižní Africe" and "Dra Emila Holuba Druhá cesta po jižní Africe". During his first journey undertaken in the years 1872-1879 he compiled the world's first map of Victoria Falls. The work puts the emphasis on the second journey which the traveler has done in years 1883-1887 with his companions and his wife Rosa. The aim of the journey was to cross the whole Africa from north to south, which, however, due to an attack from the Mashukulumbwe tribe remained unrealized. The aim of this paper is to evaluate the travelers contributions which greatly expanded several branches of science. It is worth noting his extensive ethnographic research of African tribes and the subsequent arrangement and organization of two African exhibitions in 1891 in Vienna and 1892 in Prague. The traveler was also successful in his lecturing activity and after his return from the second journey he was invited to give a lecturing tour around North America.
