Speciesism – discrimination of species as social dicsrimination?

Abstract:

Závěrečná bakalářská práce se věnuje proměňujícímu se vztahu člověka a zvířete. Sleduje konceptualizaci vztahu člověka a zvířete u dominantních historických tradic a konstatuje, že posun za dlouhé období dvou tisíc let byl velmi mírný. Zlomovou reflexi přinesli až v 70. letech 20. století filosofové etiky (Peter Singer, Rychard Ryder), kterým se podařilo v pravý čas změněných hodnot a nových postojů přijít s utilitaristickou teorií zasazující se za ochranu zvířat. V práci jsou popisovány empirické a teoretické pokusy (Ronald Inglehart, Ulrich Beck, Keith Thomas, Norbert Elias) na identifikování původu většího sentimentu a zmenšování „panského“ postoje od 60.let. Práce si dále všímá jakým způsobem se nově vzniklé hnutí za práva zvířat snaží na teoretické rovině vypořádat s tradicí antropocentrismu a humanismu, které jsou hnutím považovány za původce předsudků a diskriminačního jednání. Jako pejora-tivní označení pro tradiční postoj ke zvířatům zavádí autoři pojem speciesismus jako metaforu k rasismu a sexismu. Cílem práce je osvětlit termín speciesismu a zvláště rozebrat jeho možnou podobnost se sociologickými koncepty rasismu a sexismu.

Abstract:

The thesis is concerned with historical metamorphosis of human-animal relationship. It searches for the qualitative change within major historical knowledge discourses in last two thousand years. The paper observes negligible shift in human attitude towards animals in this period. A significant twist of the attitudes comes at about 1970s with new utilitarian view considering the well-being of animals. Philosophers of ethics (like Peter Singer, Rychard Ryder and others) sensed a value shift in society as described by Ronald Inglehart, Ulrich Beck, Keith Thomas and Norbert Elias. The rise of compassionate sentiment and diminution of traditional anthropocentric view gave surprising moment of activism and helped establish animal liberation movement. The latter part of this paper is focused on the new concept of speciesism and its possible use for language of sociology. The comparison is being drawn with two, already established sociological concepts of racism and sexism. In conclusion, the term speciesism is being argued as not on the same level with culture of prejudice, as is the case of racism or sexism. However, the term serves its purpose for animal liberation move-ment and helps to attract the attention of social justice movement.
