Instrumental use of the symbol of the Velvet Revolution in Politics

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá instrumentálním využitím symbolu sametové revoluce v české politice. V tomto ohledu jsou stěžejní teorie postsocialismu, politckého symbolismu, politické reprezentace a antikomunismu. První část práce je spíše teoretická a popisuje vztah témtatu práce ke zmíněným teoriím. Druhá část práce je metodologického rázu a zahrnuje samotný výzkum. Hlavním cílem analýzy ve druhé části práce bylo popsat způsob, jakým je osobnost Václava Havla jako symbolu sametové revoluce instrumentálně využíváno v postsocialistickém diskurzu. Výzkum byl proveden pomocí metod CAQDAS a QCA. Analýza prokazuje, že využití symbolického kapitálů Václava Havla jednotlivými politickými aktéry vede buďto k legitimizaci jejich politiky, nebo k delegitimizaci politik jejich oponentů. Zvláštní kapitola je věnována antikomunismu.

Abstract:

This diploma thesis deals with instrumental usage of velvet revolution symbol in Czech policy for which the theories of post-socialism, political symbolism, political representation and anticommunism are crucial. First part of the thesis is mostly theoretical and describes the relation of the theories mentioned and the topic of the thesis. Second part is methodological and includes the research. The main objective of the analysis in the second part of this thesis is to depict the instrumental usage of Vaclav Havel's persona as a symbol of velvet revolution in the post-socialistic discourse. The research was carried out using CAQDAS and QCA. The output of the analysis proved that usage of Vaclav Havel's symbolic capital by political actors leads either to legitimize their policies or to delegitimize their rival's policies. Separate chapter focused of anticommunism is included.
