Associations between academic motivation, meaning of life and academic performance in medical students

Abstract:

Práce se zaměřila na vztah akademické motivace, smyslu života a akademického výkonu u studentů medicíny. Hlavním cílem bylo prozkoumat, zda určité typy motivace ke studiu, postulované v rámci sebedeterminační teorie, více souvisí s životní smysluplností než jiné. Dalším cílem bylo zjistit, jestli některé typy akademické motivace a životní smysluplnost souvisí se studijním prospěch nebo časem stráveným učením. Pro sběr dat, který probíhal formou online anonymního dotazníku, byly použity metody The Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992) a Logo-test (Lukasová, 1992). Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 300 českých studentů medicíny. Získaná data byla zpracována pomocí statistického programu SPSS, korelační analýzou. Výsledky naznačily, že s vyšší mírou všech tří typů vnitřní motivace („vědět“, „dosahovat úspěchu“ a „zažívat stimulaci“) je míra životní nenaplněnosti nižší. Naopak čím větší je míra amotivace, tím více student pociťuje nenaplněnost svého života. Se studijním prospěchem významně pozitivně korelovaly všechny tři typy vnitřní motivace a negativně korelovala amotivace. U času stráveného učením jsme našli u většiny proměnných nevýznamné vztahy. Výsledky mohou nalézt uplatnění při rozhodování studentů, zda je pro ně cesta studia lékařství ten správný směr.

Abstract:

This study explored the correlation between academic motivation, meaning of life and academic achievement among medical students. The research aimed to investigate whether particular types of academic motivation, postulated within the framework of self-determination theory, are related to the meaningfulness of life more than others. Another goal of this study was to find out whether some types of academic motivation and meaning of life bear any relation to academic achievement or time spent on studying. The research was carried out in the form of an anonymous online questionnaire using two methods - The Academic Motivation Scale (Vallerand et al., 1992) and Logo-test (Lukasová, 1992). A total number of respondents comprised 300 Czech medical students. The obtained information was processed using correlation analysis in statistical software SPSS. According to the results, there is an interrelationship between all three subscales of the intrinsic motivation (“to know”, “to accomplish” and to “experience stimulation”) and life fulfillment, or rather unfulfillment. The greater the motivation, the smaller the chance of struggling with unfulfillment in life. The same applies to amotivation – the greater the amotivation, the greater the absence of happiness and satisfaction in various areas of one’s life. All types of intrinsic motivation affect academic achievement positively according to the questionnaire, whereas amotivation correlates negatively with the study results. The research also revealed that time spent on the studies is mainly an insignificant subject matter. The outcome of this study can be profitable for students when considering an application for medical school and so selecting their future career paths.
