Master's thesis

The topic of my diploma thesis project is research of media content of then printed journal in its relation to rural environment. Subject of research is specified as media representation of rural culture, including rural cultural life in the 1950s. It will be focused on media content of local weekly newspaper named Vsacka Jiskra which used to published by District National Committee in municipality of Vsetin. Subject of the project is to analyse how the selected periodikum which used to be published by local administrative authority governed by Communist party reported about cultural life in rural areas in 1950s in relation to several aspects of rural people´s culture. These aspects are mainly the way of celebration of holidays and anniversaries, modern development related to process of democratizacion of culture, relation to foreign culture in context of its divisionin to western and eastern, and relation to way of representation of foklore, folklorism and folk culture.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo popsat, jakým způsobem byl konstruován mediální obraz venkovské kultury v regionálním týdeníku Vsacká Jiskra (vydávané Okresním národním výborem Vsetín) v letech 1950-1959, tedy v době značných společenských změn venkova, které byly zapříčiněné procesem kolektivizace zemědělství. Záměrem této diplomové práce bylo analyzovat, jakým způsobem komunistická ideologie ovlivňovala mediální reprezentaci venkovské kultury. Nedílnou součástí práce je také záměr přiblížit a objasnit strukturu řízení a strategii práce ve zvoleném periodiku a tyto praktiky porovnat se základními mediálními teoriemi, které byly vyvinuty v prostředí nikoli totalitního, nýbrž demokratického zřízení (agenda setting, gatekeeping, zpravodajské hodnoty apod.).

Abstract:

The objective of this diploma thesis was to describe how the media image of rural culture was constructed in the regional weekly journal Vsacka Jiskra (published by the District National Committee Vsetin) in 1950-1959, i.e. at the time of significant social changes in rural areas caused by the process of collectivization of agriculture. The aim of this diploma thesis was to analyse how communist ideology influenced media representation of the rural culture. An integral part of the thesis is also an intention to approach and clarify the management structure and strategy of work in the selected periodical journal and to compare these practices with basic media theories that have been developed within not a totalitarian but a democratic establishment (agenda setting, gatekeeping, news values, etc.).
