Ivan Martin Jirous: hybrid between an artist and art historian

Abstract:

Předkládaná magisterská diplomová práce si vzala za cíl představit osobu Ivana Martina Jirouse tradičně spojovanou s oblastí literatury či disentu ve světě výtvarného umění, kterým se zabýval především v druhé polovině 60. let a v letech 70. minulého století. Ivan Jirous, který v 60. letech vystudoval dějiny umění na Univerzitě Karlově, působil spolu se svou první ženou Věrou Jirousovou a manželi Ságlovými jako umělecký vedoucí beatových skupin The Primitives Group a The Plastic People of the Universe a propojoval tak hudbu s výtvarnými prvky. Část diplomové práce vykresluje Ivana Martina Jirouse jako člena pseudoumělecké skupiny s názvem Křižovnická škola čistého humoru bez vtipu, jejíž činnost nenásilně korespondovala především s tendencemi akčního umění, přestože společenství primárně nemělo umělecké ambice, ale jeho existence tkvěla ve specifickém humoru a karikatuře tehdejší pokřivené doby. Druhá část práce se věnuje uměleckohistorické činnosti Ivana Martina Jirouse, již představuje především práce v redakcích kulturních periodik a později samizdatových časopisů.

Abstract:

The presented master thesis is going to introduce the personality of Ivan Martin Jirous, traditionally associated with the fields of literature or the dissent of Fine Art which he got engaged with in the second half of the 60's and also in the 70's of the last century. Ivan Jirous, graduating from the History of Arts on the Charles University in the 60's, had worked together with his first wife Věra Jirousová and the Ságl spouses as the art directors of the beat bands The Primitives Group and The Plastic People of the Universe and as such he linked music with visual elements. Part of the thesis portrays Ivan Martin Jirous as the member of the pseudo-artistic group named "Křižovnická škola čistého humoru bez vtipu" ("Order of Crusaders for Pure Humor without Banter") whose activities effortlessly corresponded mainly with the tendencies of performance art, although the order primarily did not have any artistic ambitions, but its existence consisted in specific humor and the caricature of that warped time. The second part of the thesis focuses on the art-historical activities of Ivan Martin Jirous, which resided generally in the work of the editor of cultural journals and samizdat magazines later on.
