The Dystopian Novels Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four: Limitation of Human Freedom and Individuality

Abstract:

The aim of this work is the critical analysis of two antiutopian novels: Brave New World by Aldous Huxley and 1984 by George Orwell. In Huxley's Brave New World, the human society is bound by chains of consumerism and always available and state-sanctioned entertainment that includes the consumption of drugs and promiscuous sex. On the other hand, Orwell's novel 1984 shows a society that suffers from the lack of almost every vital commodity and sex is allowed only for the reproduction purposes. People live in constant fear. The aim of this paper is to show how and with what effect Orwell and Huxley express the motives of the lack of freedom and the oppression of individual in the society.

Abstract:

Cílem této práce je kritická analýza dvou antiutopických románů: Konec civilizace od Aldouse Huxleyho a 1984 od George Orwella. V Huxleyho Konci civilizace je lidská společnost svázána řetězy konzumu a vždy dostupné a státem posvěcené zábavy, která zahrnuje konzumaci drog a promiskuitní sex, zatímco Orwellův román 1984 zobrazuje společnost, která trpí nedostatkem, sex je lidem povolen pouze pro reprodukci a většina lidí žije v neustálém strachu jeden z druhého. Cílem práce je ukázat jak či s jakým efektem vyjadřují Orwell a Huxley motivy nesvobody a útlaku ve společnosti.
