Ještěrka obecná, jakožto druh se širokým areálem rozšíření v rámci Evropy, je známá vysokým stupněm barevné variability. Tato diverzita je důsledkem několika faktorů. The sand lizard, widespread across Europe, is known for high level of colour variability. This diversity is due to several factors. From environmental influences, through anti-predation and predation adaptability, to changes in coloration during the mating season.
