Comparison of the French, US and EU response to the dispute between Greece and Cyprus with Turkey in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá reakcí Francie, USA a EU na spor o teritoriální vody a výlučnou ekonomickou zónu mezi Řeckem a Kyprem na jedné straně a Tureckem na straně druhé. Práce se téměř výlučně zaměřuje na reakce od roku 2019, tedy od doby zvýšeného napětí v regionu v důsledku umístění vojenských jednotek na řeckých ostrovech a nelegální těžby zemního plynu ze strany Turecka. Výzkum je proveden kvalitativní metodou užitím případové srovnávací studie, která je detailněji přiblížena v metodologické části práce. V metodologické části jsou dále přiblížena teoretická východiska a časové a místní vymezení práce - tedy zaměření na reakce 3 aktérů - Francie, EU a USA. Jelikož se reakce těchto aktérů z různých důvodů ubírají ve prospěch Řecka a Kypru, budu hodnotit jaká z těchto reakcí nejefektivněji pomohla Řecku uplatnit rozšíření jejích teritoriálních vod na 12 námořních mil a Kypru uchovat integritu jeho výlučné ekonomické zóny. Srovnání těchto reakcí je založeno na zkoumání 3 aspektů - 1) vojenské reakce, 2) ekonomické reakce a 3) diplomatické reakce. Tyto body budou dále přiblíženy v praktické části, kde budu reakce aktérů jednotlivě hodnotit na základě těchto aspektů jak ve vztahu k Řecku, tak i Kypru.

Abstract:

This bachelors’ thesis concern the reactions of France, USA and the European Union to the dispute between Greece and Cyprus with Turkey in the Aegean and Eastern Mediterranean. This piece almost exclusively concerns reactions from 2019 and later, hence in the time of increased tensions as a result of militarisation of Greek island and illegal gas and oil exploration on the part of Turkey. The research is conducted by the quantitative method and using case studies, this method is explained in more detail in the methodology section of this work. In the same section, theoretical basis and time and geographical frame of this work, in other words the focus on the reactions of those three actors concerned - France, USA and the European Union. Since those reactions are for different reasons in favour of Greece and Cyprus, I will evaluate which of those reactions was the most effective in helping Greece to extend its territorial waters to 12 nautical miles and keep the integrity of the Cypriot exclusive economic zone. The evaluation of those reactions is based on research of three areas - 1) military reactions, 2) economic reactions and 3) diplomatic reactions. Those aspects will be explained in more detail in the main body of this work.
