Selected ethical problems of online discussion forums' administration

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá současnými etickými problémy online komunikace, zejména etickými dilematy vynořujícími se při administraci online diskusních fór. Práce v úvodu nastiňuje teoretická východiska předkládané problematiky v etické, společenské, a mediální rovině a poskytuje normativní rámec pro snazší uchopení tématu v praktické části. Specifické aspekty online komunikace jsou poté v praktické části demonstrovány na příkladech administrace online diskusních fór, spuštěných pod obsahem nejnavštěvovanějších českých zpravodajských portálů. Cílem práce je podrobněji popsat vybrané etické problémy moderování, kontroly přístupu a kontroly obsahu diskusních fór a vystihnout tak specifika administrace čtenářských diskusí jako zvláštního druhu internetové výměny názorů a informací. Práce si všímá také virtuálních komunit, kolem online fór soustředěných, a s nimi spojených rizik, která veřejná diskuse přináší jak diskutérům tak samotným provozovatelům. Na příkladech z moderátorské praxe, získaných z přímých rozhovorů či sekundárních zdrojů, pak práce poskytuje obraz některých úskalí moderace veřejně dostupných internetových diskusních projektů a zasazuje jej do obecného kontextu informační etiky.

Abstract:

This bachelor degree thesis discusses current ethical problems of online communication; particularly the ethical dilemmas regarding the administration of online discussion forums. The theoretical issues presented in the ethical, social, and media’s point of view are outlined in the introduction and provide a normative framework for an easier understanding of the practical part of this thesis. Specific aspects of online communication are then demonstrated on the practical examples of the administration of online discussion forums, situated below the articles of the most visited czech news sites. The goal of this thesis is to describe the selected ethical problems of moderation, access control and content control of forums. Furthermore, this thesis strives to describe the specifics of the administration of the readers’ debate as a special kind of internet exchange of views and information. The thesis points out the virtual community centered on the online forums, and related risks of public debate to both debaters as well as the operators. Based on examples from moderators’ practice, obtained from direct interviews as well as secondary sources, the thesis provides a view of some moderation pitfalls of publicly available Internet debate projects and places them in the general context of information ethics.
