Nuclear medicine in the diagnostics of tumors and metastasis

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá oblastí nukleární medicíny a jejím využitím v diagnostice a léčbě nádorových onemocnění, s důrazem na karcinom prostaty. V úvodu práce je popsán význam nukleární medicíny v onkologii a zdůvodněna motivace k výběru daného tématu. První část práce se podrobně věnuje základním principům nukleární medicíny a metodám, které se v ní používají. Jsou popsány různé typy radiofarmak a jejich využití v diagnostice nádorů. Důraz je kladen na zobrazovací metody, jako je scintigrafie, SPECT a PET. V průzkumné části práce jsou prezentovány tři případy pacientů s karcinomem prostaty, kteří podstoupili diagnostiku a léčbu na oddělení nukleární medicíny v Ústí nad Labem. U každého pacienta je popsána jeho anamnéza, výsledky diagnostických vyšetření a průběh léčby. Kazuistiky zdůrazňují důležitost nukleární medicíny v diagnostice kostních metastáz karcinomu prostaty a v monitorování léčebného procesu. V diskuzi práce jsou shrnuty výsledky kazuistik a diskutována jejich relevance pro klinickou praxi. Jsou analyzovány rovněž limity nukleární medicíny a možnosti dalšího výzkumu v této oblasti. Závěr práce sumarizuje role nukleární medicíny v diagnostice a léčbě kostních metastáz karcinomu prostaty, tudíž zde docházíme k jednoznačné konkluzi, že se jedná o cenný nástroj pro onkologické pacienty.

Abstract:

The bachelor's thesis deals with the field of nuclear medicine and its use in diagnostics and treatment of cancer, with an emphasis on prostate cancer. In the beginning of the thesis, the importance of nuclear medicine in oncology is described, and the motivation for choosing such a specific topic is justified. The first part of the work is devoted in detail to the basic principles of nuclear medicine and the methods used in it. Various types of radiopharmaceuticals and their use in tumor diagnostics are described. Emphasis is given to imaging modalities such as scintigraphy, SPECT and PET. In the research part of the thesis, three cases of prostate cancer patients, who underwent diagnosis and treatment at the nuclear medicine department in Ústí nad Labem, are presented. For each patient, their medical history, the results of diagnostic examinations, and the course of treatment are described. Case reports emphasize the importance of nuclear medicine in the diagnosis of bone metastases of prostate cancer, and in monitoring the treatment process. In the discussion of the work, the results of the case studies are summarized, and their relevance for clinical experience is discussed. The limits of nuclear medicine and the possibilities of further research in this area are also analyzed. The outcome of the thesis summarizes the role of nuclear medicine in the diagnostics and treatment of bone metastases of prostate cancer, therefore we come to the clear conclusion that it is a valuable tool for oncology patients.
