Place-Connectedness and the Nature-Culture Discourse in Selected Works by American Nature Writers

Abstract:

Tato magisterská diplomová práce se zabývá dichotomií přírody a kultury a zkoumá, do jaké míry se tito dva účastníci dualizmu ovlivňují. S cílem tvrdit, že koncept spojení s určitým místem je platný i v dnešních časech k uvědomění si a následnému formování identity jedince nebo komunity, je prezentováno několik způsobů vnímání krajiny a přírody ve všeobecnosti. Názory žen a etnických menšin jsou zahrnuty v práci k tomu, aby poskytli různorodý výčet komentářů k environmentálním tématům, které se týkají všech bez rozdílu pohlaví nebo etnické příslušnosti. Rámcová ideologie pro tuto práci byla čerpána z díla ekologa a environmentalistu Garyho Snydera a ekokritika Lawrence Buella, který definuje pět modelů spojení s místem. Některé z esejí environmentálně orientovaných spisovatelů jsou analyzované k tomu, aby se u autorů poukázalo na smysl pro místo a taky k tomu, aby se uvedlo i několik příkladů nesprávného zacházení a vykořisťování přírody, co vedlo k několika environmentálním krizím, ze kterých by se mělo lidstvo poučit. Snyder také vybízí k bdělosti a aktivitnímu přístupu nenechat se zaslepit přetvářkou mocných a médií, že všechno je v pořádku. Naopak – lidstvo by mělo znovuobjevit svůj smysl pro místo, který by v konečném důsledku sloužil celému přírodnímu systému.

Abstract:

This master’s diploma thesis deals with the nature-culture dichotomy and explores to what extent the two participants of the dualism influence each other. Various ways of perceiving the land and nature in general are presented in order to suggest that the concept of place-connectedness is valid even in these days for the realization and forming of identity of an individual or a community. The points of view of women as well as ethnic minorities are included to provide a heterogeneous account of the commentaries on the environmental issues which concern everybody notwithstanding gender or ethnicity. The framing ideology of the thesis comes from the work of the deep ecologist and nature writer Gary Snyder, and from the ecocritic Lawrence Buell who defines five models of place-connectedness. Some essays from other nature writers are analyzed to demonstrate the degree of a sense of place of the authors and also to present examples of mistreatment and exploitation of nature. This resulted in several crises from which humankind should learn a lesson. Snyder also calls for awareness and activity to not to get blinded by the authorities and media by the pretense that everything is all right – instead, humankind should rediscover its sense of place which would at last benefit the whole biotic system.
