Dubai as a postmodern city

Abstract:

Koncept postmoderního města je často spojován především s hédonismem, úpadkem hodnot, relativizací a radikálním pluralismem. Hlavním cílem této bakalářské práce je nejprve definovat koncept postmoderního města na základě hlavních znaků a následně jej aplikovat na metropoli Dubaj. První teoretická část práce vychází z předních postmoderních filosofů, sociologů a geografů a hledá společné znaky těchto tří sfér, aplikovatelné na městskou strukturu a městský život. Druhá teoretická část se zaobírá geografickou charakteristikou města Dubaj. V analytické části dochází k aplikaci zjištěných poznatků, znaků a ověření, zda může být moderní dubajská metropole označována za postmoderní. Samotným závěrem následuje konstatování, zda se jedná spíše o "slepou ulici" ve vývoji lidstva, anebo naopak zda by měl být tento model následován.

Abstract:

The term "Postmodern city" is often associated mainly with hedonism, demoralization, relativism and radical pluralism. This bachelor thesis aims to define the concept of postmodern city by means of its main attributes and then to apply this founded concept on the city of Dubai. First theoretical part of this thesis is based on leading expert´s opinions in the field of philosophy, sociology, geography. It is subsequently looking for common features, which would be applicable on urban structure and urban life. Second theoretical part provides reader with a geographical characterization of Dubai. Finally, the main analytical part shows the application of founded postmodern features on Dubai City and verifies whether this modern metropolis can be labelled as "postmodern" or not. Last part consists of authors opinion whether this kind of development is simply a "dead end" or new innovative model, which should be followed.
