Transition process towards sustainability in the fashion industry

Abstract:

Módní průmysl zaujímá v globální ekonomice významné místo. Současně se ale jedná o druhého největšího znečišťovatele životního prostředí s podílem asi 10 % na celkových globálních emisích skleníkových plynů. Kromě oblasti životního prostředí ovlivňuje tento průmysl negativně také sféru lidských práv. Tato situace vyžaduje změnu. Cílem této bakalářské práce je představit, jak probíhá přechod módního průmyslu k udržitelnosti. Vzhledem k tomu, že značný podíl na této environmentální zátěži přináší tzv. „fast fashion“, je cílem této práce navrhnout, jak by měly velké fast fashion řetězce postupovat, aby umožnily přechod celého módního průmyslu k udržitelnosti. Studie využívá dotazování expertů na danou problematiku prostřednictvím metody Delphi. Následná tematická analýza získaných dat odhaluje několik hlavních témat. Výzkum ukazuje, že firmy budou muset zcela změnit svůj obchodní model a přejít na udržitelnější modely, které jsou v souladu s principy cirkulární a sdílené ekonomiky.

Abstract:

Fashion industry has a significant role in global economy. At the same time, it is the second largest polluter with a share of 10 % of total global carbon emissions. In addition to the environment, it also has a negative impact on human rights. It is therefore necessary to initiate major changes in the current unsustainable practices. The aim of this bachelor’s thesis is to find out how is the process of transition towards sustainability in the fashion industry currently going. Given that the "fast fashion" model has a significant share in this environmental burden, the second purpose of this research is to evaluate how should fast fashion companies act to enable the transformation towards sustainability in the fashion industry. This was determined by interviewing experts using the Delphi method. Subsequent thematic analysis of the obtained data contributed to the discovery of several main topics. It was found out that companies will eventually have to completely change their business model and move to more sustainable solutions that are in line with the basic principles of a circular and shared economy.
