Diversity and distribution of mayflies (Ephemeroptera) in relation to mesohabitats of submontane brooks

Abstract:

Tato práce se zabývala diverzitou a početností larev jepic (Ephemeroptera) v podhorských potocích v oblasti Vnějších Západních Karpat. Hlavními cíli práce bylo (i) popsat druhovou diverzitu jepic ve vybraných podhorských potocích, (ii) srovnat druhové spektrum dvou skupin potoků a dvou hlavních mesohabitatů v tocích (peřeje a tůně) a (iii) vyhodnotit druhovou bohatost studovaných potoků ve vztahu k druhovému spektru potoků podobného typu ve Vnějších Západních Karpatech a celé České republice. Byly studovány dva typy potoků: chladné potoky s nízkým podílem tůní a nízkou vodivostí vody (potoky typické pro Beskydy) a teplejší potoky s vysokým podílem tůní a vysokou bazicitou (potoky typické pro Bílé Karpaty a Javorníky). Vzorky makrozoobentosu byly odebrány na šesti lokalitách třikrát během roku (duben, červen a srpen) v roce 2012. Celkem bylo odebráno a zpracováno 36 vzorků. Při vzorkování byly měřeny hlavní proměnné prostředí: pH, konduktivita, teplota vody, rychlost proudění, hloubka, podíl peřejí a tůní. Celkem bylo zjištěno 23 taxonů jepic ze 6 čeledí. Ve větších a chladných tocích byly zjištěny vyšší abundance jedinců, ale počet zjištěných druhů byl téměř stejný. V obou typech potoků se vyskytovaly druhy, které byly pro danou skupinu jedinečné. Počty jedinců se ve dvou hlavních mesohabitatech lišily, počty zachycených druhů byly srovnatelné. V peřejích byl nalezen větší počet jedinců jepic než v tůních, pravděpodobně díky velkému podílu peřejí ve většině toků. V obou typech mesohabitatů se vyskytovaly druhy, které pro ně byly jedinečné. Z celkového druhového spektra karpatských druhů obývajících krenál a rhitrál byly ve studovaných potocích zachyceny přibližně dvě třetiny taxonů.

Abstract:

This thesis was focused on the diversity and abundance of mayfly larvae (Ephemeroptera) in submontane brooks in the Outer Western Carpathians. The main aims of this study were to: (i) describe species diversity of mayflies in selected submontane brooks, (ii) compare species composition of two groups of brooks and two main mesohabitats (riffles and pools), and (iii) compare species richness of studied brooks with species pool of mayflies known from similar types of brooks in the Outer Western Carpathians and the whole Czech Republic. Two types of submontane brooks were studied. The first type included cool brooks with a low share of pools and low water conductivity (typical brooks for the Beskydy Mts.). The second type of brooks included warmer submontane brooks with a high share of pools and high basicity (brooks typical for the White Carpathians and Javorníky Mts.). Three series of samples (April, June and August) were collected in six submontane brooks in 2012. Altogether 36 samples were collected and processed. During the sampling main environmental variables were measured: pH, water conductivity and temperature, flow velocity, depth and proportions of riffles and pools. In total, 23 taxa of mayflies belonging to 6 families were identified. Colder and wider brooks had higher total abundance of mayflies than warmer and smaller brooks; the numbers of species recorded were, however, similar. Both types of brooks had their unique mayfly species. Abundance of mayflies in riffles and pools differed, but the numbers of species recorded were comparable. Higher number of specimens was found in riffles than in pools, probably due to higher share of riffles in the majority of studied brooks. Unique species were recorded in both mesohabitats. Even two thirds of species of the total species pool of crenal and rhitral streams in the Outer Western Carpathians were recorded in the studied brooks.
