Inflation, unemployment and Phillips Curve in Czech Republic

Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem inflace a nezaměstnanosti v podmínkách České republiky za období let 1990 až 2012 a snaží se jejich vztah doložit známými tvary Phillipsovy křivky. Cílem této práce bude poukázat na závislost mezi inflací a nezaměstnaností a vysvětlit kroky centrální banky a vlády, které v jednotlivých letech následovaly. V této práci pracuji s hypotézami, že: • Vláda ČR se snaží udržet nezaměstnanost na přirozené míře nezaměstnanosti. • Od 90. let 20. století provádí ČNB svou měnovou politiku v režimu inflačního cílování, tedy zavazuje se usilovat o to, aby se inflace za normálních vnějších ekonomických podmínek pohybovala na úrovni vyhlášeného inflačního cíle. • V podmínkách ČR je možné potvrdit vztah mezi mírou inflace a mírou nezaměstnanosti, tedy tvar Phillipsovy křivky, jak z krátkodobého, tak z dlouhodobého hlediska. Použitými metodami v této práci budou metody popisu a komparace na základě sběru empirických údajů za posledních 22 let a jejich následná analýza.

Abstract:

The diploma thesis deals with the issue of inflation and unemployment in the Czech Republic within the years 1990 to 2012 and tries to prove their cognation by the known shapes of Phillips curve. The objective of this diploma thesis is to point out the dependence between inflation and unemployment and explain individual steps of the Czech National bank and the government which followed in the years. The assumptions I work with are: • The government of the Czech Republic tries to keep the unemployment at the natural rate. • Since the 1990s the Czech National bank has been performing the monetary policy in the regime of inflation targeting. It commits to seek for inflation moving at the level of the announced inflation target. • In the situation of the Czech Republic it is possible to confirm the cognation between the rate of inflation and the rate of unemployment, thus the shape of short-term and long-term Phillips curve. The methods used in this diploma thesis will be description and comparison based on the empiric dates from the last 22 years and their follow-up analysis.
