Analysis of time series of monthly average temperatures in Europe and North America for the period 1959–2018

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se zabývá analýzou časových řad průměrných měsíčních teplot naměřených na devíti zvolených meteorologických stanicích nacházejících se na území Evropy a Severní Ameriky v letech 1959-2018. Data byla pořízena z veřejně dostupné americké databáze National Centers for Environmental Information.Cílem této práce je analyzovat a porovnat vývoj jednotlivých časových řad. Osm z devíti meteorologických stanic je uspořádáno do párů, ve kterém se nachází dvě stanice s (téměř) shodnou zeměpisnou šířkou, ale na odlišném kontinentu. Pro tuto analýzu byly využity základní popisné charakteristiky časových řad, jejich dekompozice a modelování trendové složky pomocí trendových funkcí. Dalším cílem této práce je prozkoumat, zda se na těchto stanicích ve sledovaném období zvýšila průměrná měsíční teplota, zdali se dvojice stanic na různých kontinentech liší a zdali je případný nárůst průměrné měsíční teploty výraznější blíže k pólům.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis is focused on analysis of time series of monthly average temperatures measured at nine selected meteorological stations, five of which are located in North America and the remaining four in Europe. The work covers the period from 1959 to 2018. The data were taken from a public US-based database National Centers for Environmental Information. The aim of this thesis is to analyze and compare the evolution of selected time series. Eight out of the nine stations are arranged in pairs, so that both of the stations in a certain pair have a nearly identical latitude while also being located on a different continent to the other station in that pair. Basic descriptive characteristics of selected time series were used, as well as their decomposition and trend functions were used for modelling the trend part of the time series. Another goal will be to examine whether the average monthly temperature at all stations has risen in the aforementioned time period, whether the stations on one continent show any different developments to the ones on the other continent, and if a possible rise in the average temperature is more apparent nearer to the poles.
