Alejo Carpentier and His Testimony about the Caribbean Culture

Abstract:

The objective of this diploma thesis was to focus on Carribean culture displayed in novels of Cuban writer Alejo Carpentier. Firstly, we introduced the Carribean region. In the next chapter we look at the role of Alejo Carpentier in latinoamerican prose. The concept of ?marvelous reality? was defined and we roughly introduced the life and work of the author. The end of theoretical part is dedicated to the contents of three novels which we chose for analysis in the practical part. The novels in particular are Praised be the Lord, The Kingdom of this World and The Lost Steps. In our opinion these are the works where the Carribean culture can be seen the most. We devided the practical part into three main chapters, which represent three most common cultural testimonies in selected novels of Alejo Carpentier. First chapter introduces us to the surrounding where these novels are taking place, the modern city, countryside and rainforest. We described the social status of its inhabitants. The second chapter is devoted to the religions of Carribean people, Afrocubans inclining to voodoo, nanigismo and santeria religions, white people inclining to Christianism and Indians and their ananism religion. The last chapter is dedicated to music and its artistic or religious purpose. At the end of the work we assured ourselfs of Carpentier being mostly interested in religious, targeting mostly afrocubans or Indians. He is portraying their social status and their view on the world. In contrast, he is putting white Europeans rulling the world against them. Carpentier's work is strongly influenced by his fondness of music. His work is the same as Carribean, different races are mixed with different religions and music styles.

Abstract:

Cílem této diplomové práce bylo zaměřit se na karibskou kulturu vyobrazenou v románech kubánského spisovatele Aleja Carpentiera. Nejprve jsme představili karibskou oblast. V následující kapitole jsme se zabývali postavením Aleja Carpentiera v latinskoamerické próze. Definovali jsme pojem ?zázračného reálna? a ve stručnosti jsme představili život a dílo spisovatele. Konec teoretické části jsme věnovali obsahu tří románů, které jsme si vybrali pro analýzu v praktické části. Jednalo se o knihy Pochválen budiž tvůrce, Království tohoto světa a Ztracené kroky. Podle nás právě v těchto knihách je nejlépe vyobrazena karibská kultura. Praktickou část jsme rozdělili do tří hlavních kapitol, které zastupují tři nejčastější kulturní svědectví ve vybraných románech Aleja Carpentiera. První kapitolu představuje prostředí, ve kterém se odehrávají děje románů, jedná se o moderní město, venkov či prales. Popsali jsme společenské postavení jeho obyvatel. Druhá kapitola se zabývá náboženstvím karibského obyvatelstva, afrokubánci vyznávající náboženství vúdú, ?a?igismus, santeríi, bělochům inklinujícím ke křesťantsví a indiánům a jejich animismu. Poslení kapitola je věnována hudbě a jejímu uměleckému nebo náboženskému záměru. V závěru práce jsme se přesvědčili o tom, že Carpentier se zabývá především náboženstvím, zaměřuje se na afrokubánce nebo indiány. Vyobrazuje jejich společenské postavení a jejich pohled na svět. Proti nim staví vládnoucí vrstvu bělochů evropského původu. Carpentierovo dílo je silně ovlivněno jeho zálibou v hudbě. Jeho dílo je stejné jako Karibik, mísí se v něm různé rasy, náboženství i hudební styly.
