The fantastic in the short stories of Borges and Cortázar: questioning of the hegemony of the modern empirical racionality.

Abstract:

The thesis deals with the work of two important Argentinian writers, Jorge Luis Borges and Julio Cortázar. The investigation focuses on selected stories within the concept of “the fantastic” as defined by the contemporary literary criticism. The thesis demonstrates how the fantastic elements in the selected texts question the prevailing rational discourse and prefigure the passage from modernity to postmodernity. The first part of the work is dedicated to a historical-cultural overview and familiarizes the reader with the concepts of modernity and postmodernity and their significance for the Argentinian literature; it introduces the reader to writers´ lives and works and clarifies their role in the Argentinian literary tradition. The second, practical part is dedicated to the definition of “the fantastic” and to the analysis of the selected stories. It focuses on questioning of the hegemony of the prevailing rational thinking and points out the texts´ postmodern character.

Práce se soustředí na dílo dvou významných argentinských spisovatelů, Jorge Luise Borgese a Julia Cortázara. Předmětem zkoumání jsou vybrané povídky z hlediska pohledu “fantastična”, tak jak ho formulovala současná literární kritika. Práce ukazuje, jak fantastické prvky u obou autorů zpochybňují převládající racionalistický diskurz a předznamenávají přechod od moderny k postmoderně. První část práce je věnována historicko-kulturnímu přehledu a obeznamuje čtenáře s konceptem moderny a postmoderny a jejich významem pro argentinskou literaturu, uvádí čtenáře do života a díla autorů a osvětluje jejich úlohu v argentinské literární tradici. Druhá, praktická část je věnována definici “fantastična” a analýze vybraných textů. Zaměřuje se na zpochybnění hegemonie racionálního uvažování a poukazuje na postmoderní charakter textů.
