Persistent Software Vulnerabilities for Hands-on Cybersecurity Training

Abstract:

Vzdelávacia prax v posledných desaťročiach neustále potvrdzuje, že najlepší spôsob, ako sa niečo naučiť, je prostredníctvom praktických skúseností. V dôsledku toho vznikajú na podporu procesu vyučovania a učenia rôzne, typicky virtualizované interaktívne vzdelávacie prostredia. Kybernetická bezpečnosť taktiež využíva výhody tejto formy školenia, napríklad na zlepšenie zručností trénujúcich v zneužívaní zraniteľností a následne tomu predchádzať. Súčasný prístup k vytváraniu zraniteľných tréningových prostredí však často vedie k ich nefunkčnosti, nakoľko je integrovaný zraniteľný softvér po určitom čase aktualizovaný alebo jeho používanie už nie je vo všeobecnosti podporované. Ide síce o prirodzený dôsledok životného cyklu softvéru, ktorý ale na druhej strane predstavuje stratu drahocenného času na výrobu jednorazových učebných pomôcok.Táto diplomová práca navrhuje a demonštruje prístup vytvárania dlhodobo použiteľných praktických školení v oblasti kybernetickej bezpečnosti s pretrvávajúcimi softvérovými zraniteľnosťami.

Abstract:

Educational experience in recent decades has consistently confirmed that the best way to learn something is through practical experience. As a result, different, typically virtualized interactive learning environments are designed to support learning and teaching. Cybersecurity uses benefits of this training form as well, for instance, to improve trainees' skills in vulnerability exploitation and, consequently, to prevent that. However, the current approach to constructing vulnerable lab environments often leads to their malfunction as integrated vulnerable software is updated or deprecated after some time. Although it is a natural consequence of the software life cycle, it is also a waste of precious time to produce one-off teaching aids. This master thesis proposes and demonstrates an approach to creating long-term hands-on cybersecurity training with persistent software vulnerabilities.
