Abstract:

Tato diplomová práce se zaměřuje na trilogii Maddaddam kanadské spisovatelky Margaret Atwood. Účelem práce je poukázat na vztah mezi trilogií Maddaddam a karnivaleskou, což je teoretický koncept vycházející z díla Michaila Bachtina. Práce zkoumá, jak je karnivaleska v trilogii Maddaddam používána za účelem zesměšnění a kritiky negativních aspektů dnešní společnosti jako je chamtivost, konzum, nemorálnost a sobectví. Práce také poukazuje na rozdíly mezi dvěma typy karnivalesky, které se v trilogii objevují. Jeden typ je svázán se zakladatelem konceptu karnivalesky, Michailem Bachtinem, který karneval a karnivalesku definuje jako veskrze pozitivní fenomén. Druhý typ karnivalesky je ovlivněn současnými literárními vědci, jako je Linda Hutcheon, která karnivalesku nazírá nejen pozitivně, jako možného hybatele sociálních změn, ale také jako literární nástroj pro upozornění na krutost a odcizení v moderním světě. Práce dokládá, že Atwood v trilogii Maddaddam kombinuje oba typy karnivalesky (karnivalesku Bachtinovskou a moderní) nejen proto, aby kritizovala moderní způsob života, ale také proto, aby představila nadějeplný pohled na budoucnost planety Země.

Abstract:

This Master thesis focuses on the Maddaddam trilogy by Margaret Atwood. The thesis aims to show links between carnivalesque, a theoretical concept that was originally described by Mikhail Bakhtin, and Atwood’s trilogy. It explores the ways in which carnivalesque is used in the Maddaddam trilogy to mock and critique the negative aspects of today’s society such as greed, consumerism, immorality and selfishness. In addition, the thesis points to the differences between two types of carnivalesque that are being used in the course of the trilogy. One type of carnivalesque is linked to the founder of the concept, Mikhail Bakhtin, who defines carnival and carnivalesque as being a thoroughly positive phenomenon. The second type of carnivalesque is influenced by contemporary literary scholars such as Linda Hutcheon and perceives carnivalesque as not only having a positive impact of potential change, but also being a literary device to draw attention to the cruelty and alienation of modern society. The thesis argues that in Maddaddam trilogy, Atwood manages to combine both types of carnivalesque (the Bakhtinian carnivalesque and the modern carnivalesque) in order to not only mock and criticize the modern way of life, but also to offer a hopeful outlook for the future of the Earth.
