Anthropomorphic applied motifs on the Middle Neolithic Pottery in the Carpathian Basin and its surroundings

Abstract:

Human depictions undoubtedly belong to the most impressive displays of Neolithic art although it needs to be admitted that the attention paid to the issue of antromomorphic applications in the circle of specialists is not sufficient and these findings are approached in a very shallow and non-systematic way. The aim of the thesis is to contribute to the knowledge of the formation and the origin of the applied antropomorphic motives in the Carpathian area and, at the same time, complete our knowledge on symbolical, ritual elements and spiritual ideas of Mid-neolithic communities based on the study of the specific type of findings. One of the main areas of research is the issue of function, meaning and the interpretation of vessels with facial or figural applications and the issues mostly connected with the context of the found items. With these and similar artefacts, we traditionally come across the label „cult items“. However, with this paper, we would like to prove, that it is utmost groundless and missleading to consider every finding with a human shape to be a „cult objects“. Within this study we would like to prove, that the automatic consideration of all the findings with applied depiction of a human shape to be ritual object is utmost groundless and misleading as well as the monovisual attempt to interpret them in connection to the universal female deity.

Abstract:

Ľudské zobrazenia patria nepochybne k najpôsobivejším prejavom neolitického umenia. Napriek tomu treba priznať, že pozornosť venovaná problematike nádob s antropomorfnými aplikáciami v odborných kruhoch nie je dostatočná a k týmto nálezom je obvykle pristupované dosť povrchne a nesystematicky. Cieľom tejto práce je prispieť k poznaniu formovania a vzniku antropomorfných aplikovaných motívov v karpatskom priestore a zároveň doplniť naše vedomosti o symbolických systémoch, rituálnych prvkoch a duchovných ideách stredoneolitických komunít na základe štúdia tohto konkrétneho typu nálezov. Jedným z hlavných výskumných okruhov je problematika funkcie, významu a interpretácie nádob s tvárovými, respektíve figurálnymi aplikáciami a s tým súvisiace otázky týkajúce sa predovšetkým nálezového kontextu skúmaných exemplárov. Tradične sa stretávame s označením týchto a podobných artefaktov pojmom „kultové predmety“. V rámci tejto práce však chceme dokázať, že automaticky pokladať všetky nálezy s aplikovanou ľudskou podobou za rituálne predmety je nanajvýš nepodložené a zavádzajúce, rovnako ako monovizuálna snaha o ich interpretáciu v súvislosti s univerzálnym „ženským božstvom“.
