Intersectionality of race and gender explored through the experience of African American women in the early 20th century in contrast to white women as portrayed in The Color Purple and The Awakening

Anotace:

Tato práce se zabývá porovnáním vyobrazení ženského boje za identitu, autonomii a sebevyjádření v patriarchální společnosti v dílech The Color Purple a The Awakening. Za pomoci intersekcionálního a feministického rámce zkoumá, jak rasa, třída a gen-der formují odlišné cesty protagonistek – Celie a Edny – k seberozvoji. Prostřednic-tvím komparativní analýzy studie zdůrazňuje kontrast mezi individuální izolací a ko-lektivní solidaritou, které zásadně ovlivňují cestu k autonomii.

Abstract:

This thesis explores how The Color Purple and The Awakening depict women´s struggles for identity, autonomy, and self-expression within patriarchal societies. Using an intersectional and feminist framework, it examines how race, class, and gender shape Celie´s and Edna´s distinct paths toward selfhood. Through comparative analysis, the study highlights the contrast between individual isolation and collective solidarity as forces that define the possibilities of female liberation.
