People and gods in ancient religions: Ancient Greece and Rome

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce se zabývá popisem řeckých a římských božstev a jejich následným srovnáním. Nejsou opomenuty ani lidské představy o bozích. Pokusí se také přiblížit vliv řeckého a římského pantheonu na českou kulturu a to prostřednictvím knihy Kosmova kronika česká. Práce je rozdělena na řeckou a římskou část. V první části budou představeny počátky řecké i římské mytologie a uvedeny dva mýty s nimi související, pro snazší vhled do probírané oblasti. Byly vybrány dva nejznámější mýty, které souvisí s tématem bakalářské práce. Druhá část nám přiblíží původ náboženství a náboženské představy. Nevynechá vztah člověka k náboženství, který vedl až ke vzniku kultu orfismu. Bude objasněno, proč jsou pěvec Homér a básník Hésiodos velmi důležití pro antické náboženství. V následující části bude podrobně vylíčena genealogie bohů k ujasnění okolností počátku nastolení jejich vlády. V římské části se setkáme s řeckými protějšky bohů. Dále se práce pokusí identifikovat příčiny proměn funkcí bohů, které vedly lidi k nové představě o bozích. V antické civilizaci docházelo ke zbožštění přírodních sil a jejich projevů, které si časem přivlastnily lidskou podobu. V páté části bude objasněno, jak si lidé představovali bohy, které se snažili uctívat oběťmi a modlitbami. Budou uvedeny příklady obětí, které se zasvěcovaly bohům. Modlitby přiblíží náboženský život. Šestá část zdůvodní, proč antické náboženství muselo zaniknout a proč se křesťanství stalo oblíbené. Úpadek náboženství přicházel postupně, objevovaly se snahy o jeho zachování, které ovšem nepomohly k jeho záchraně. V poslední části bude provedena deskripce a komparace nejvyšších řeckých a římských bohů. Obsah této kapitoly je systematicky strukturován, na počátku stojí nejvyšší řecký bůh Zeus. Tato bakalářská práce má sloužit k lepší orientaci nejvyšších řeckých a římských bohů a k přiblížení náboženských představ antického národa, který ovlivnil i českou společnost.

Abstract:

This bachelor thesis deals with Greek and Roman gods and goddesses and it compares them. There are also presented people´s notions of gods. This thesis tries to describe the influence of Greek and Roman pantheon on Czech culture by means of the book ´Kosmova kronika česká´ (´Chronicle of Bohemians´). The thesis consists of two parts, the Greek and the Roman one. The first part introduces the beginning of Greek and Roman mythology. For an easier insight into the field, there are mentioned two myths connected with this mythology. The two most known myths are chosen. They are related to the topic of this bachelor thesis. The second part gives an idea of the origin of religion and religious notions. It doesn´t miss out the people´s relation to religion which led to development of the cult of orphism. It explains why the singer-poet Homer and the poet Hesiod are of great significance for the classical religion. In the following section is described the gods´ genealogy in detail. The purpose is to clarify the circumstances at the beginning of their reign. We meet the counterparts of Greek gods in the Roman section. Further, my thesis tries to identify causes of changes of gods´ roles which led people to new notions of gods. We find apotheosis of nature powers and their manifestations in the ancient civilization. They adopted human appearance in the course of time. The fifth part clarifies people´s ideas of gods who they tried to worship by victims and prayer. There are examples of victims that were dedicated to gods. The prayer gives an idea of religious life. The sixth part gives reasons why the ancient religion had to disappear and why Christianity became popular. The coming decline of the ancient religion was gradual, there were efforts to save it but they failed. The last part describes and compares the major Greek and Roman gods. The content of this chapter is systematically structured and the king of gods, Zeus, is to be found at the beginning. This bachelor thesis is aimed to provide better knowledge of the major Greek and Roman gods and to expound religious notions of the ancient nation that also influenced the Czech society.
