A Discriminatory Opportunity: Position of Overqualified and Underemployed Migrants in Austria

Abstract:

Cílem práce bylo postihnout to, jakým způsobem jsou migranty v Rakousku vnímány témata překvalifikovanosti, diskriminace na pracovním trhu a integrace migrantů. Analýza vychází z dat Rakouského statistického úřadu a z vlastních dat, která byla získána formou online dotazníku mezi imigranty v Rakousku. Výsledky a zjištěné vztahy jsou popsány a analyzovány na základě Pearsonova korelačního koeficientu. Byla prokázána pozitivní korelace mezi vyšší úrovní vzdělání a vnímanou překvalifikovaností (s výjimkou respondentů s doktorským vzděláním). Z dat naopak nevyplýval příliš úzký vztah mezi znalostí německého jazyka a úrovní integrace migrantů. Práce se též věnovala tomu, jakým způsobem je k migrantům přistupováno v rámci pracovního trhu.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to understand the perception of education-occupation overqualification, labor market discrimination, and the integration of immigrants in the labor market in Austria. It also analyzed the difference experience in the labor market of those with foreign backgrounds and those of native Austrians. The study is comprised of a statistical analysis of the Statistik Austria database in which education and employment factors were correlated. And the second aspect of the research was a survey that was conducted online that was asked to foreigners that immigrated to Austria. The results and relationships are described and analyzed using the Pearson correlation coefficient. They showed the positive correlation exists between higher education and overqualification (omitting PhD responses). It also showed that the level of German fluency is not highly correlated to the level of integration. Lastly, we found that the labor market treated immigrants generally less favorable than native Austrians.
