Ad hominem in the philosophical discourse

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce seznamuje s problematikou ad hominem argumentů. Tento typ argumentu je charakteristický tím, že svůj útok zaměřuje na charakter oponenta/oponentky, jeho/její nestrannost, konzistenci jeho/její pozice atd. V první části práce jsou představeny dva současné argumentační směry. Neformální logika je reprezentována jejím předním zástupcem, Douglasem Waltonem, který se argumentačním faulům, potažmo argumentu ad hominem, věnuje v řadě publikací. V druhém zmíněném argumentačním přístupu, pragma-dialektice, se o rozvoj poznatků v oblasti ad hominem a osobních útoků ve velké míře zasloužili Frans H. van Eemeren a Rob Grootendorst, posléze Bart Garssen a Bert Meuffels. Ve druhé části práce – případové studii – jsou získané poznatky těchto přístupů aplikovány na konkrétní pasáže Sedmých námitek Descartových Meditací o první filosofii.

Abstract:

The bachelor thesis introduces the issue of ad hominem arguments. This type of argument is characteristic for its attack aimed to character of an opponent, his or her impartiality, consistency of his or her position etc. In the first part, two contemporary approaches to argumentation are shown. Informal logic is represented by its prominent representative Douglas Walton who devotes a number of his works to the study of fallacies, ad hominem included. In the second approach to argumentation, pragma-dialectics, those who contributed to the study of ad hominem the most are Frans H. van Eemeren and Rob Grootendorst, followed by Bart Garssen and Bert Meuffels. In the second part of the thesis – a case study – information acquired through the study of named approaches are applied to the specific extracts of the Seventh Objections of Descartesʼ Meditations on First Philosophy.
