Maintenance of French in Sudbury, French Ontario

Abstract:

The master's thesis Le maintien de la langue française à Sudbury, Ontario français deals with the French-speaking community in Sudbury which lies in the anglophone province Ontario in Canada, and their effort to maintain the French language as a minority language in the English-speaking environment. The thesis is divided into two parts - theoretical and practical. The theoretical part deals with the language situation in Canada, French-speaking Ontario, the brief history of Grand Sudbury, the local Francophone community and cultural events held in the past and present. A separate chapter is then devoted to a Franco-ontarian comic book for children, which was published in Sudbury. The practical part contains three worksheets intended for pupils of the French language with the A1 - B1 level according to the Common Framework of Reference for Languages. All three worksheets are linked by the theme of francophony. The first one deals with the francophony in the world, the second with the French-speaking Canada and the third with the French-ontarian comic book Ti-Jean fin voleur. The aim of these worksheets is to inspire the French language teachers.

Tématem diplomové práce Le maintien de la langue française à Sudbury, Ontario français je frankofonní komunita ve městě Sudbury v kanadské provinci Ontario a udržování francouzského jazyka jakožto minoritního jazyka v anglofonním prostředí. Práce je rozdělena na dvě části – teoretickou a praktickou. Teoretická část se věnuje jazykové situaci v Kanadě, frankofonnímu Ontariu, stručné historii města Grand Sudbury, místní frankofonní komunitě a kulturním akcím pořádaných v minulosti a současnosti. Samostatná kapitola je poté věnována jednomu franko-ontarijskému komiksu pro děti, který byl vydán právě v tomto městě. Praktická část obsahuje tři pedagogické listy určené žákům, kteří mají úroveň A1 – B1 podle Společného referenčního rámce pro jazyky. Všechny tři pedagogické listy spojuje téma frankofonie. První list se zabývá frankofonií ve světe, druhý frankofonní Kanadou a třetí pak přímo franko-ontarijským komiksu Ti- Jean fin voleur. Tyto pracovní listy mají za cíl sloužit jako inspirace učitelům francouzského jazyka.
