Preneoteric poetry

Abstract:

Název preneóterická poezie a preneóterici je odvozen od první římské básnické školy tzv. neóteriků (zvaných též poetae novi) z prvního století př. n. l., jejíž hlavním a nejznámějším představitelem byl C. Valerius Catullus. Jejich tvorba byla charakteristická osobními tématy (zejména intenzivním prožíváním lásky), formálním příklonem k helénistické poezii okruhu Kallimacha z Kyrény, odmítáním politické aktivity, metrickými i lexikálními experimenty a společně sdíleném programu tvorby v úzkém okruhu přátel. Mezi preneóteriky tudíž počítáme sedm autorů, u nichž tyto tendence můžeme zaznamenat poprvé. Jedná se o Q. Lutatia Catula, Valeria Aeditua, Porcia Licina, Laevia, Gnaea Matia a Sueia. Etablují do římského básnictví milostný epigram a didaktickou poezii, experimentují se slovy i metry. Bohužel o jejich životě (s výjimkou Q. Lutatia Catula) nemáme takřka žádné informace a jejich tvorba je zachována pouze fragmentárně. Tato práce se pokouší poznatky o preneótericích shrnout, zařadit jejich tvorbu do literárního i historického kontextu, informovat o způsobu zachování jejich tvorby a zhodnotit jejich vliv na římskou poezii ve svém celku.

Abstract:

The term preneoteric poetry and preneoterici is derived from the first Roman poetry school of neoterici (also known as poetae novi) from the first century BC, whose main and the best known representative was C. Valerius Catullus. Their work was characterized by personal themes (especially by intensive experiencing of love), formal tending towards hellenistic poetry of Kallimachos of Kyrene circle, refusal of political engagement, by metrical and lexical experiments and by commonly shared concept of activity within the close circle of friends. Therefore, in the preneoterics group seven authors are included, by whose it is possible to mark named tendencies for the first time: Q. Lutatius Catulus, Valerius Aedituus, Porcius Licinus, Laevius, Gnaeus Matius and Sueius. They entrench love epigrams and didactic poems into Roman poetry and experiment with words and metres. Unfortunately, we have only scarce information about their lives and their work is only fragmentarily preserved. This thesis tries to summarize the pieces of knowledge about the preneoterics, put their writings into literary and historical context, describe the forms of preservation of their works and evaluate their influence on Roman poetry on the whole.
