Bestiality in the novels of Émile Zola

Abstract:

This thesis addresses the subject of bestiality across novels Theresa Raquinová and The Human Beast written by the important French writer, representant of naturalism Émile Zola. In this work we focus mainly on the motives and manifestations of bestiality, which we analyze separately and finally subjected to an overall comparison. We are interested in what the motives and manifestations of bestiality of main protagonists of both novels are similar and in which features they are different. Furthermore, we observe many animal metaphors in both novels, when we think about the connotations and typology. Finally, we analyze the environment of the selected railway lines in the novel The Human Beast, which, as we are aware, does not create “only” background of Zola´s story, but shows that the name of the novel does not refer only to the bestiality of man.

Abstract:

Bakalářská práce se věnuje tématu bestiálnosti napříč romány Tereza Raquinová a Člověk bestie od významného francouzského spisovatele, představitele naturalismu, Émila Zoly. V práci se zaměřujeme zejména na motivy a projevy bestiálnosti, které jednotlivě analyzujeme a v závěru podrobujeme celkovému srovnání. Zajímá nás, v čem se právě motivy a projevy bestiálnosti hlavních protagonistů obou románu shodují a v čem se naopak liší. Dále si všímáme četných zvířecích metafor v obou románech, kdy se zamýšlíme nad jejich konotací a typologií.V neposlední řadě se věnujeme analýze zvoleného prostředí železničních drah v románu Člověk bestie, které, jak si uvědomujeme, nevytváří „pouhé“ pozadí Zolova příběhu, ale které ukazuje, že název románu neodvolává jen na bestiálnost člověka.
