Deployment of a federated machine learning architecture on oncological data

Abstract:

Riešenu mnohých problémov v oblasti onkológie prospieva spolupráca rôznych výskumných pracovísk. Tomu však často bránia obmedzenia týkajúce sa používania citlivých údajov o pacientoch mimo inštitúcie, z ktorej pochádzajú. Konceptom, ktorý sa snaží prekonať tieto výzvy je federatívne učenie, ktoré umožňuje spoluprácu pri strojovom učení tým, že väčšinu výpočtov vykonáva lokálne, poskytuje len čiastočné výsledky, ktoré nezdieľajú citlivé údaje a následne ich integruje do spolupráce, na ktorej sa podieľajú viaceré pracoviská. V tejto práci vyvýjam a spúšťam úlohu federovaného zhlukovania na onkologických dátach za pomoci jednej z infraštruktúr pre federatívne učenie, Vantage6, poskytujem o nej krátky prehľad a porovnávam implementovaný federatívny algoritmus s klasickým centralizovaným prístupom.

Abstract:

Many tasks in the field of oncology benefit from the cooperation of various research facilities. However, this is often hampered by the restrictions regarding the use of sensitive patient data outside of the host institution. A concept that tries to help researchers overcome these challenges, federated learning, allows for cooperation on machine learning tasks by doing most of the computations locally, only providing partial results that do not expose sensitive data to flow from each institution and then integrate them into a multi-site collaborative task. In this thesis, I seek to deploy a federated clustering task on oncological data by using one of the infrastructures for federated learning, Vantage6, review its capabilities, and compare the implemented federated algorithm to a classic, centralized approach.
