Character of Roman towns in England

Abstract:

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe character of Roman towns in England. The thesis focuses on dividing towns based on their legal status and on the description of buildings specific for Roman towns and also on the development of towns during the era of Roman rule. The Romans were founding towns as a Romanization tool on newly conquered territories. In contrast to Celtic settlements they had civic buildings such as forums or bathhouses. However it was revealed that over time such buildings lost on their importance because they were often deserted or they completely changed their original purpose. In order to establish a proper time frame, the thesis also deals with the beginnings of Roman rule during which plausible conditions for town creation were created.

Abstract:

Tato bakalářská práce si klade za cíl popsat charakter římských měst v Anglii. Práce se zaměřuje na rozdělení měst po jejich legální stránce, na popis budov specifických pro římská města a vývoj, kterým města prošla během období římské vlády. Římané zakládali města jako nástroj romanizace na nově dobytých územích. Oproti předchozím Keltským osídlením města disponovala budovami komunální a městské povahy jako například fóra nebo lázně. Ukázalo se však, že během času ztrácely budovy tohoto typu na významu, neboť byly často opuštěny nebo změnily svou původní funkci. Pro uvedení tématu do kontextu doby práce také obsahuje popis počátku římské vlády v Anglii, během kterého se vytvořily podmínky pro zakládání měst.
