Media in the everyday life of childern's home's residents

Abstract:

Tato práce pojednává o roli médií v každodennosti obyvatel dětského domova. Je příspěvkem do oblasti mediálních studií vycházejících z kontextuální tradice výzkumu. Poskytuje možná první pohled na oblast užívání a působení médií ve spojení se specifickým prostředím dětského domova a jeho obyvateli. Slouží proto jako explorační sonda do této oblasti a její výsledky lze chápat pouze jako náznaky možných souvislostí, nikoli jako výčet zobecnitelných závěrů. V první části jsou uvedena teoretická východiska z různých oborů sociálních věd, nezbytná pro pochopení výzkumného kontextu a konceptů, s nimiž je pracováno během výzkumu (totální instituce, deprivace, hospitalismus, teorie užívání a uspokojení, teorie sociálního učení, teorie televizní kultivace, teorie informační chudoby, kulturní kapitál, názorový vůdce apod.). V další části je popsáno provedení a výsledky kvalitativního výzkumu – případové studie založené především na etnografických metodách (terénní pozorování, zaměřené skupinové rozhovory formou hry a jednoduché dotazníky). Nasbíraný materiál (jehož zpracovaná forma je součástí přílohy) byl interpretován a závěry vyhodnoceny v analytické části této práce. Ta popisuje, jaká média, jak často a jakým způsobem obyvatelé DD konzumují a jak na tuto konzumaci působí vlivy charakteristického prostředí. Představuje pozorované funkce, které média plní zejména ve vztahu k potřebám obyvatel dětského domova, stejně jako jejich obecný význam. Zaměřuje se i na možný vliv ze strany médií.

Abstract:

This thesis tries to name roles of the media in the everyday life of children's home's residents. It constributes to the media studies area taking contextual scientific view. It offers one of the first approaches to the media use and impact related to the specific conditions of children's home and characteristics of it's residents. It should be taken as an exploring probe into this field and not as a research leading to generaly valid conclusions. The first part comprises theoretical background taken from different disciplines of social science. They help to comprehend the context and concepts used in this research (total institution, deprivation, hospitalism, uses and gratifications theory, social learning theory, cultivation theory, information poverty, cultural capital, opinion leader etc.). This is followed by the description of a qualitative research – a case study conducted mostly by means of ethnographic methods (field research, focus group interview – game design, and simple questionnaires). Gathered matherial (find attached) was interpreted and the conclusions eluded and recorded in the analytical part of this work. It offers an answer to the following questions: 1) what media, how often and in what way the residents of the childern's home consume; 2) what influences of the specific environment can be observed; 3) what functions can the media fulfil; 4) what general value they have and 5) if there is any media influence towards this specific audience.
