England in Europe: European connections in Maureen Duffy's novels Illuminations and Restitution.

Abstract:

Tato práce představuje současnou britskou spisovatelku Maureen Duffy, jako autorku, jejíž pozornost se v posledních dvou desetiletích soustřeďuje jak na problematiku evropanství obecně, tak na politický a kulturní vztah Anglie ke kontinentální Evropě. Toto téma Duffy rozvíjí ve svých románech Illuminations a Restitution, jejichž dějové linie se odehrávají v ranném středověku a v 80.letech 20.století v prvním případě a v období třicátých a čtyřicátých let minulého století a těsně po pádu berlínské zdi v případě druhém. Obě románová díla kladou důraz převážně na problém evropské identity, poukazují na společnou evropskou kulturu jako jednotící prvek, na dávnou i novodobou historii, na odkaz křesťanství a v neposlední řadě na etnickou provázanost národů na území Evropy. V tomto kontextu autorka upozorňuje také na zvláštní až schizofrenní postavení Anglie, která se v různých obdobích snažila od kontinentální Evropy izolovat politicky i kulturně, přestože podle Duffyové její místo vždy bylo a je jedině v Evropě, třebaže zeměpisně leží na jejím okraji. Autorka práce se zaměřila především na analýzu politických vztahů předválečné a poválečné Evropy, na roli křesťanství v utváření Západní Evropy a evropanství, na utváření vlastní i politické identity a na morální odpovědnost jedince ve společnosti.

Abstract:

The aim of this thesis is to present Maureen Duffy, a contemporary British novelist, as an author who, for the past two decades, has focused on the issue of Europeaness on one hand and on England’s political and cultural relationship with continental Europe on the other. Duffy explores England’s European interest in her two novels Illuminations (set in the Early Middle Ages and 1980s) and Restitution (set in the 1930s and 40s, and also in the period shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall). Both works of fiction put emphasis on the problem of European identity, point to the shared European culture which serves as a unifying agent, discuss long-time as well as contemporary history and the legacy of Christianity and lastly they present ethnic interconnection of European nations. This is the context in which Duffy foregrounds the ambiguous position of England which tried to isolate herself politically and culturally from continental Europe at various points of time, in spite of the fact that according to the author her place was and has always been with Europe. The main themes analysed in this paper are the political relationships in Europe before and after the Second World War, the role of Christianity in shaping the emergence of Western Europe and Europeaness, the creation of both personal and national identity, and the moral responsibility of an individual in society.
