Austrian libertarian school: Comparing role of the state in society theories by von Hayek and Rothbard

Abstract:

Rakouská škola představuje alternativní ekonomický směr vyznačující se specifickými rysy, které ji odlišují od ekonomického mainstreamu. Představitelé rakouské školy jsou řazeni do tzv. pravicového libertarianismu, jehož základním východiskem je svobodná tržní ekonomika a velmi omezená role státu. Rakouská škola však není zcela jednotná a její představitelé se ve svých postojích mnohdy liší. Tato práce se zabývá odlišnými postoji k roli státu ve společnosti dvou významných teoretiků rakouské školy F. A. Hayeka a M. Rothbarda. Oba autoři vychází z východisek libertariánského myšlení a byli ve svých dílech ovlivněni Ludwigem von Misesem, přesto jsou jejich závěry ohledně toho, jak rozsáhlé pravomoci by měl stát mít, velmi odlišné. Cílem práce tedy bylo porovnat teorie těchto dvou autorů a ověřit, zda se vztah mezi nimi vyznačuje odstředivou tendencí. K naplnění cíle mi pomohlo zejména srovnání postojů k státnímu intervencionismu, k němuž autoři přistupují zcela jinak. Zatímco z Hayekových děl vyplývá, že jsou státní instituce a orgány ve společnosti žádoucí, ne-li dokonce nutné, Rothbard takové tvrzení odmítá s tím, že je společnost schopna fungovat na základě tržních principů, které stát svou existencí narušuje. Proto ve své teorii navrhuje úplné zrušení státu. Teprve poté bude společnost ryze libertariánská. Ačkoliv jsou oba autoři představiteli libertarianismu, v jejich odlišných přístupech ke státu se ukazuje, že Hayek je velmi umírněným libertariánem a Rothbard naopak radikálním.

Abstract:

Austrian school is an alternative approach to economics with its specific features that differentiate it from mainstream economics. Main figures of the Austrian school are considered to belong to the so called right-wing libertarianism, whose main emphasis is on free competitive market and very limited role of the state. However, Austrian school is not homogenous and the figures differ in attitudes towards different subjects. This thesis focuses on different approaches to the role of the state in the works of two significant theorists of the Austrian school F. A. Hayek and M. Rothbard. Both authors base their approach in libertarian theory and both were influenced by Ludwig von Mises, yet their conclusions regarding the role of the state significantly differ. The main goal of this thesis was to compare the two authors and to establish, if their relationship is characterized by centrifugal trend. The goal was reached by comparing their attitudes towards state interventionism. While Hayek's works suggest that the state institutions and organs are desired, if not necessary in the society, Rothbard refutes such statements by saying that the society is able to function solely by following market principles, which the state disturbs. Thus, according to Rothbard, once the state is abolished, the society shall be truly libertarian. Even though both authors are considered to represent libertarian theory, their different attitudes towards the state suggest that Hayek is a very conservative libertarian, while Rothbard is a radical one.
