Possibilities of growing ergot in the conditions of the Czech Republic

Abstract:

Cílem bakalářské práce bylo zpracovat literární přehled problematiky pěstování a využití paličkovice nachové – námele, především v podmínkách České republiky. Na úvod byl představen životní cyklus paličkovice a historie poznání a využití této houby až po současnost. Paličkovice nachová (Claviceps purpurea) je houba, která je svým životním cyklem úzce navázána na vývojový cyklus hostitelských rostlin, jejichž semeníky infikuje. Napadá převážně rostliny z čeleni lipnicovitých (Poaceae), ale i další čeledi jednoděložných rostlin. Z hlediska vztahu ke své hostitelské rostlině se na ni pohlíží převážně jako na parazita, nicméně paličkovice svými sklerocii, které obsahují toxické alkaloidy může rostliny chránit před požerem herbivorů a škody na výnosu semen způsobené infekcí dokáže rostlina zpravidla nahradit. V minulosti sklerocia paličkovice často znehodnocovala úrody obilí a způsobovala onemocnění zvané ergotismus. Jako původce ergotismu nebyla paličkovice dlouho známa, ale v minulosti byla v mnoha oblastech využívána pro své léčivé účinky, zejména v porodnické praxi. Léčivé účinky paličkovice pochází z obsahu námelových alkaloidů, které spadají mezi alkaloidy indolové. Mezi námelové alkaloidy patří například ergometrin. V následující části práce byla rozebrána technologie pěstování obecně a dále v rámci České republiky, od přípravy očkovacího materiálu přes agrotechniku až po vztahy mezi zpracovatelem a dodavatelem tohoto specifického produktu v rámci našeho zemědělského sektoru. V současnosti se námel pěstuje parazitickým a saprofytickým způsobem. Námel se v České republice pěstuje výhradně pro potřeby farmaceutického průmyslu (zpracovatele) a objem jeho produkce je tak vázán na smlouvy se zpracovatelem. Česká republika je jedním z hlavních producentů námelových alkaloidů ve světě. Vzhledem k příznivému klimatu pro vývoj houby se zde námel pěstuje parazitickým způsobem očkovaný na žito (Secale cereale). Lokality vhodné pro pěstování námele se vyznačují zpravidla vyššími ročními srážkovými úhrny a vlhkým podnebím bez nebezpečí větrů. Námel se na žito očkuje manuálně, postřikem anebo pomocí speciálních očkovacích strojů. Sklizeň námele je doporučené opakovat vzhledem k postupnému dozrávání sklerocií. Námel je sklízen buď ručně anebo za pomocí speciálních sklízecích strojů či sklízecími mlátičkami společně se žitem ve voskové zralosti.

Abstract:

The goal of this bachelor work was to prepare a review of the possibilities and issues of the cultivation of Claviceps purpurea – ergot, especially within the conditions of the Czech Republic. At first the life cycle of Claviceps was introduced and the history of ergot and its use was presented. Claviceps purpurea, the member of the fungi kingdom, has its life cycle closely connected with cycles of its host plants, whose ovaries it infects. Claviceps prefers the Poaceae family, but it can infect many families within the monocotyledons. In the terms of its relationship with the host plant, Claviceps is often called a parasite, but the toxicity of alkaloids can protect the host plant from herbivores and the loss of the yield caused by the infection can be usually compensated. In the past, ergot often contaminated harvested corn and caused an illness called ergotism. Although the ergot was not known as a cause of ergotism for a long time, in the past it was cherished in many places for its medicinal effects, mainly in the obstetrics. The medicinal effects of ergot come from the contain of ergot alkaloids, which are a class of indole alkaloids. Ergometrine is an example of an ergot alkaloid. In the following part the technology of ergot cultivation in the Czech Republic was explained including the preparation of the inoculation material, agricultural technology and the relationships between processors and suppliers of this specific merchandise within the Czech agricultural sector. Currently, ergot is cultivated parasitically and saprophytically. In the Czech Republic ergot is cultivated on demands of the pharmaceutical industry (the processor) and the volume of the production is determined by a contract with the processor. The Czech Republic is one of the main producers of ergot in the world. In the Czech Republic ergot is produced parasitically on the rye (Secale cereale) because the climate there is favorable for natural development of Claviceps. Locations suitable for parasitic production of ergot are usually those with higher annual precipitation and a humid climate with no winds. Ergot can be inoculated on rye manually, sprayed or with the use of special inoculation machines. It is recommended to repeat the harvest because ergot tends to ripen unevenly. Ergot can be harvested by hand or with the help of special harvesting machines or by combine harvester together with the rye in the stage of wax ripeness.
