Abstract:

Cílem práce je analýza ženských vyobrazení Irska v nacionalistické literatuře od 50. let 19. století do Velikonočního povstání roku 1916. S pomocí teoretického rámce feministické kritiky a konceptu jinakosti je cílem práce identifikovat měnící se formy těchto vyobrazení a jejich skryté cíle v kontextu kulturního a politického prostředí zkoumané doby. Jelikož byla tato zobrazení původně používána Velkou Británií k diskreditaci irských nároků na nezávislost, mapuje tato práce vývoj těchto vyobrazení od imperiálního nástroje přes jeho subverzi v nacionalistický nástroj kritiky a mobilizace až k základům nové irské národní identity.

Abstract:

This thesis aims to analyse female depictions of Ireland in nationalist literature from the 1850s to the Easter Rising of 1916. Using the theoretical framework of feminist criticism and the concept of the Other, the thesis aims to identify the varying forms of these depictions and their underlying objectives, considering the cultural and political climate of the examined time period. Since these depictions were formerly used by the Great Britain to discredit Ireland’s claims to independence, the thesis maps the development of these depictions from an imperial device through its subversion as a nationalist tool of critique and mobilisation, and finally, to the basis of a new Irish national identity.
