Implementation of API testing solution using Amazon Web Services

Abstract:

API (application programming interface) je v současné době široce používanou softwarovou architektonickou komponentou. To je částečně způsobeno rostoucí popularitou architektur orientovaných na služby (SOA, service-oriented architecture) a architekturou mikro služeb (microservices), Internet věcí (Internet-of-Things) a řadou dalších trendů vývoje softwaru. V daném kontextu je testování API důležitou částí integračního testování pro velké množství aplikací a služeb.Vzhledem k rostoucímu zájmu o cloudové služby ze strany byznysu, bude řada specialistů v oblasti softwarové kvality a dalších účastníků procesu vývoje pravděpodobně čelit otázce jaké jsou možnosti exekuce automatizovaných testů v cloudu. Tato práce se soustředí na řešení daného problému v kontextu jedné konkrétní Společnosti. Hlavním cílem této práce je porovnání řešení pro testování API založené na cloudové službě funkce jako služba (Function-as-a-Service) implementované pomocí služby AWS Lambda s řešením pro testování API běžícím na virtuálním počítači hostovaném v Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. Tento cíl je podporován několika dílčími cíli: zformulovat kritéria porovnání obou řešení, vytvořit sadu automatizovaných testů API shodných s těmi použitými ve Společnosti, implementovat dvě řešení testování API s využitím různých cloudových služeb (cloudový virtuální stroj a funkce jako služba), porovnat dvě implementace testovacího řešení API založeného na službách Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud a AWS Lambda.

Abstract:

Application programming interface (API) is nowadays a widely used software architectural component. This is partially caused by the growing popularity of service-oriented (SOA) and microservices architectures, Internet of Things (IoT) devices and a number of other software development trends. This makes API testing a crucial part of integration testing for a considerable amount of applications and services.Due to the tendency towards cloud adoption by a large number of companies, a lot of quality specialists and other participants of development process are likely to face the question of how to run the automated tests they have in cloud. This problem and how it can be resolved in the context of one specific Company is the main focus of this work.The main goal of this work is to compare a function-as-a-service based API testing solution implemented using AWS Lambda services with an API testing solution running on a virtual machine hosted in Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud. This goal is supported by several objectives: to formulate the criteria of comparison of the two solutions, to create a set of automated API tests analogous to the ones used by the Company, to implement two API testing solutions that are using different cloud services (a cloud-hosted virtual machine and Function-as-a-service specifically) to adjust a set of automated API tests to be executed in cloud; to compare two implementations of API testing solution based on Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud and AWS Lambda services.
