Humour, Satire and Irony in The Canterbury Tales and in Their Film Adaptations.

Abstract:

Záměrem této bakalářské práce je rozpoznat a analyzovat prvky humoru, satiry a ironie v Canterburských povídkách Geoffreyho Chaucera a v některých jejich filmových adaptacích. V první části jsou prezentovány okolnosti Chaucerova života a komičnost povídek a jejich protagonistů. Zmíněné kapitoly poskytují informace nezbytné k porozumění podstaty Chaucerova humoru. Druhá část pozorně zkoumá tři z povídek: Povídku rytířovu, Povídku mlynářovu a Povídku ženy z Bath. Tato část se zaměřuje převážně na komický aspekt těchto povídek, a kde je to možné rozpoznat, i na jednotlivé prvky (výše zmíněné). Dále se snaží tyto prvky humoru, satiry a ironie určit ve filmových adaptacích. V neposlední řadě tato práce, na základě podrobné analýzy, dochází k závěru, že i přes uplynulá staletí, hlavní myšlenka humoru, či ironie, byla ve filmových adaptacích úspěšně zachována.

Abstract:

The intention of this thesis is to identify and analyze the elements of humour, satire and irony in Chaucer‘s Canterbury Tales and some of their film adaptations. In the first part, Chaucer’s personal circumstances and the comicality of the Tales as well as its protagonists are presented. These sections provide necessary information in order to understand the essence of Chaucer’s humour. The second part examines closely three of the Tales: The Knight’s Tale, the Miller’s Tale and the Wife of Bath’s Tale. It focuses on humorous aspect of the Tales and the particular elements, where detectable, and also attempts to locate these in the film adaptations. Based on the result of the research, this thesis than concludes that despite the time difference, the principal message carried by humour or irony was preserved in the adaptations, thus classifying these as successful.
