Constrained writing of OuLiPo and its reflection in the work of Georges Perec

Abstract:

Diploma thesis called “Constrained writing of OuLiPo and its reflection in the work of Georges Perec” disserts on the principles of literal work of the group OuLiPo, which was founded in 1960 and includes both writers and mathematicians. The members of this group, inspired far beyond the field of literal fiction – in mathematics, are characteristic by experimenting with the literal form. The thesis analyses mutual relation of an author and a reader, as well as, the attitude of the OuLiPo members towards the concept of chance and freedom seemingly resulting from it. Their supposedly non-existing aesthetics is inspected too. The main goal is to introduce the motivation and the working process with the “constriction“ – rules voluntarily accepted by the members. As an illustration, the works La Disparition and Les Revenentes are used. In these works Georges Perec, the author, chose (as the constriction) an alphabet lacking the vowel “e” in first case, and all vowels except the “e” in the second case.

Abstract:

Bakalářská diplomová práce s názvem „La contrainte oulipienne et son reflet dans l'œuvre de Georges Perec“ se zabývá principy literární tvorby skupiny OuLiPo, která vznikla v roce 1960 a která slučuje spisovatele a matematiky. Pro členy této skupiny, inspirujícími se daleko za hranicemi beletrie – v matematice, je charakteristické experimentování s formou literárního díla. Práce zkoumá vzájemný vztah autora a čtenáře a postoj členů skupiny k pojmu náhody a svobody z ní zdánlivě plynoucí. Zamýšlí se také nad jejich údajně neexistující estetikou. Jejím hlavním cílem je představení motivace a způsobu práce s „omezeními“ – pravidly dobrovolně přijatými autory. K ilustraci jsou použita díla La Disparition a Les Revenentes, při jejichž psaní si autor, Georges Perec, jako omezení zvolil abecedu postrádající v jednom případě samohlásku „e“, ve druhém všechny samohlásky kromě této.
