Adaptable Combination of Network Traffic Traces

Abstract:

Monitorovanie siete, detekcia a prevencia prieniku sú nevyhnutnou súčasťou sieťovej bezpečnosti. V súčasnosti existuje neprehliadnuteľný nedostatok vhodných datasetov pre výskum a validáciu pokrokov v tomto odbore. Jedným z nádejných kandidátov sú čiastočne označené datasety, generované ako mix verejných sieťových vzoriek a súkromných vzoriek sieťovej prevádzky. Cieľom tejto práce bolo rozšírenie existujúceho Intrusion Detection Dataset Toolkit s funkcionalitou na vytváranie čiastočne označených datasetov z anotovaných jednotiek. Výsledný rozśíriteľný Trace-mix modul je prispôsobený k vývoju sieťovej prevádzky a sieťovým anomáliám prevádzky umožnením jednoduchého pridávania nových transformačných funkcií. Základné transformácie paketov boli testované generovaním niekoľkých čiastočne označených datasetov. Výsledky boli vyhodnotené na základe dopadu na štatistické hodnoty a detekovateľnosťou datasetou systémom detekcie prieniku.

Abstract:

Network traffic monitoring, intrusion detection, and prevention are an essential part of network security. At the current day, there exists a considerable lack of viable public datasets for both research and validating new approaches. One of the promising candidates for this purpose are the semi-labeled datasets, generated as a mix of public traffic samples and private background traffic. The goal of this thesis was to extend an existing Intrusion Detection Dataset Toolkit with the capability to create semi-labeled datasets from Annotated Units. The result was an extensible Trace-Mix module intended to accommodate evolution and unexpected anomalies in the network traffic by allowing for the simple addition of new transformation functions. Base packet transformations were tested by generating multiple semi-labeled datasets. These datasets were evaluated based on the change in statistics and their detectability by an intrusion detection system.
